Window shows up but then immediately closes
« on: December 25, 2011, 12:20:17 am »
Been playing Audiosurf for a while now and i got a few new gifts for christmas. A pair of wireless turtle beaches and an upgrade to my keyboard that involved me installing the SteelSeries Engine. Other than that nothing has changed on my computer and audiosurf has always run smoothly. Any ideas? when this started happening I re-downloaded the game but nothing changed. Not even getting an error, half the time i get an add from steam like I had quit the game like normal.

ModVer: 5.3.2600.5512    Offset: 000168be

Try verifying the game's cache files through Steam.

As far as I can tell, it's an issue in the dinput.dll file, which if corrupt, will be redownloaded by Steam.

Try reinstalling DirectX, looks like the DX8 driver's playing up.

No luck with checking the files on steam, it said they were all good. About the Directx I did not un-install it first just updated it and such and it is still not working if I should un-install it let me know where I can find it but other than that It is still just opening up the window for a mere second then closing down.

Have you tried this?

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Yep then it tells me no installation necessary because there is the same or newer version already installed.

Could you try running it with the keyboard unplugged?
I've a feeling the steelseries stuff might be causing an issue.

dinput8.dll is the Windows library for accessing input devices through DirectX and the keyboard is one of these.

Took out the keyboard and no change but I am going to try deleting the software for the keyboard it'self

Just deleted the steelseries software in order to see if that was the problem I am now getting errors it is not just closing it's self the first error I believe is the same one from before
AppName: questviewer.exe    AppVer: 0.0.0.0    ModName: dinput8.dll
ModVer: 5.3.2600.5512    Offset: 00016324

But the new error is this: The instruction at "0x7c910f1e" referenced memory at "0x00000080". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
The instruction at "0x7c9108f3" referenced memory at "0x00000080". The memory could not be "written"

There were 2 more of those same errors but with different numbers and jazz

It's still the input driver from DirectX at fault.
Do you have any other games that work?

That's often the case, the engine is temperamental at the best.

If it worked before your Steelseries keyboard, then one would be justified in blaming that. You uninstalled and rebooted with no luck?

Indeed good mr. Blue x. I have re-downloaded audiosurf a few times now and tried uninstalling the steelseries stuffs with no avail Is there anything that I could delete that belongs to audiosurf that maybe reinstalling is missing that would not destroy the rest of my computer? I also updated Itunes before it stopped working just incase that is important.

Edit: Breakthrough. I found something else that does not work now that I have gained these new items. Ventrillo

AppName: ventrilo.exe    AppVer: 3.0.5.0    ModName: dinput8.dll
ModVer: 5.3.2600.5512    Offset: 000168be

That is the error. Could it possibly be the headphones? I would sincerely hope not considering they were a quite  expensive gift from my girlfriend. The headphones are "Earforce PX3" Turtle beach headphones.

You can manually delete %Steam%\SteamApps\common\audiosurf and %Steam%\ClientRegistry.blob after uninstalled Audiosurf (while Steam is not running of course).

Here's a long shot (as in time)
Uninstall AS
Delete files as above
Uninstall Steelseries
Reinstall DirectX (an even longer step would be uninstall DX beforehand)
Reboot
Install AS

Itunes shouldn't do anything, at least it's not been reported as affecting AS before.

Another route would be to try another game using Quest3D (the engine AS is built on) to see if it's something to do with the engine and your machine. http://quest3d.com/demos

It may be the headphones as they use a USB port.

Try unplugging them and see if Audiosurf will start.

If that works then it may be possible to plug them back in after Audiosurf has started, it may not. Windows can be funny about these sorts of things.

It might be worth trying unplugging all USB devices except your mouse as something is clearly messing about with direct input that specific programs can't cope with.
