So I was playing a new song and basically I had a combination of colors on the grid that would have cleared itself out, but the song ended abruptly and I didn't get the clean finish bonus. I'm guessing I also missed out on the points from the clear.

Seems to me like something that should be fixed.

where there whites, in there, at the end of the game, it will let the last match complete, but if that causes a white to fall, or sets of a other match, it will count those as still on the board at game end.

I don't think there were any whites in there, but I think there was a gravity match. Either way, wouldn't it make sense that upon completing the song, the game runs the matching algorithm fast-forward and resolves the last bricks in the grid?

It's a known bug, though in the end some called it a feature. It was suggested that the game completed any left over matches before scoring but iirc the conversation ended as saying it should remain as a feature to aid adding to the difficulty of a clean finish.

You might be able to dig it up using search, was a few years back now though.

This problem typically occurs on songs that end abruptly. It's a shame, but the best way to handle songs with this ending is to avoid gravity matches at the end, including placing white blocks on the top of the final match. However, it's easier said than done. Songs with these abrupt endings also tend to show zero dropped chains in the extended stats. Zero dropped chains is really no better than one dropped chain. I watched a video displaying a song that ended abruptly with 3 white blocks on the board in the process of leaving the board. Here's the link:

that happened to me when i played pusher on midi anarchism. if song ends immediately, avoid whites and gravity matches, yes it sucks, and i have lost many cf due to it.

I used to not like it, but nowadays, I like it because it adds to the difficulty on those fast songs that end abruptly. Takes more skill, I suppose, in a way.

Which is why it was probably left in there.

Despite the skill it takes, some players still think it's unfair because they feel like it's unnecessary. They feel like they've been robbed of a clean finish.

Now I'm not an Audiosurf expert though in my personal opinion it doesn't really take skill at all.. It just requires you to run the song enough to memorize where you have to clear the board and stop collecting cars. It's not really a matter of skill it's more a matter of taking measures to compensate for a rather unnecessary mechanic.

Doesn't matter if it takes skill or not.

Matters whether it's rule or bug

Though adapting your play style and being able to remember that last few seconds of block placement requires no skill at all, so you are right, well done.

Technically it isn't a clean finish is it? You don't get a clean match in the same scenario with Eraser or Pusher. The match timer ends when the song finishes and there'll be blocks still on the board.....

It should be a clean finish because on songs that don't end abruptly because there is enough time for the blocks to leave the board as a result of gravity for the clean finish to be registered. When the song ends abruptly there isn't enough time for the clean finish to be registered. Most songs end in a way that allow for gravity to be completed so that the clean finish can be deemed official.

Well, aeminence I've seen your youtube channel and I can understand how a person with your skill will take any extra challenge gladly. It's only natural that you see this differently than I do, however does this "rule" really add to the depth/fun of the game? I don't think it does.
