Is it possible to point me in the direction of something that could tell me how to check that port is open? I only know how to forward ports (and also that my router absolutely to do it!)

Port 80 is the default HTTP internet port, if it's closed you won't see anything in your browser.

Might have been said before though just to clarify and summarise:

When you start AS, do you see the news screen? (You should see this page load http://www.audio-surf.com/news.php )
Play a song (without logging in etc), do you see scoreboards load after finishing?
Are you able to log into an existing account? (If you don't have one, PM me and I'll make one and send you the details.)

Yes, I see the "news" screen when starting Audiosurf.
The scoreboards don't seem to fully load; they stay at "contacting servers"
No, I am unable to log into the account that I created on my brother's computer for AS.

Hmm, sounds like inbound data is okay, ie loading a page, but outbound (sending login details, scoreboard request) is hampered.

Though, the new browser is Chromium based but scoreboards and sign in is done via Internet Explorer. IE is definately installed, set to online mode and allowed past firewalls/routers right?

Almost certainly. I can use IE to access this site and all others.
