On a similar note, I wouldn't mind seeing an revamp of all the characters. Maybe an Audiosurf 1.2 or something. Buff all the characters, but buff eraser on a lesser extent to the others and just keep the scoreboards. However, it has been done before and the conversations about OP characters are still had.
Audiosurf is like a mix of tetris, need for speed and pot... Look at all the colours, dude!

There was a huge attempt to balance before the web update. The thing is we didn't know really what we were looking for, nor how to test. If it was to happen again, those that are still about could probably do a better job, and we'd have to organise it better with everyone playing set songs, taking account of everyone's skill levels.

*We = those who took part in the testing.

I still enjoy the game for the odd surf, and I'm not playing competitively much any more. The imbalance doesn't overly bother me, however I'd help with balance effort (albeit it unlikely).

If there is another attempt to change character balance the beta should be more than 3 months long. When players are trying a newly modified character they display their skills within 3 months. However, their skills can change after 12 months. After approximately 12 months the characters start looking overbuffed due to the skills that have advanced in the long run.

I've done a dig through my e-mail box and found out the beta test ran from approx august 19 2009 til approx october 9 2009. Which is one and a half month. It was by large not enough.

But we discussed beta + pros and cons in another topic as well.

It's not gonna happen. Let this thread drift gently towards the bottom of the page, where it'll never be seen again, so it can venture onward into the mysterious world of the second page and beyond.

As a base note as to why Eraser is mildly unbalanced: Before the patch Eraser was under-used because it was hard to get scores at the same level as Pusher or Pointman.
As a result there was no-one in the patch beta that played Eraser competitively.
So there wasn't really anyone that was in a position to have the skill with the character to thoroughly test it within the short period of the patch beta.

It became apparent a few months later that it wasn't quite balanced, but I don't think it's massively broken. Vegas is more of a problem, but even that is only causing issues on the Pro level and is more down to how many times a player can be bothered to run the track rather than anything else.

It's very unlikely anything is going to get changed now anyway, so I guess my point is that if you're bothered about Vegas, get better and go Elite.
If you're bothered about Eraser either learn it yourself or get better. :)

I can't play anything other than Mono on Elite so I don't count anyway. :D

well no-one played competitive eraser before so there were no skilled players to test with and even if there were, adding the dropping of erasers blockes is a huge change to mechanics for the character, gave eraser a way to extend matches and chain, and a very efficient way to optimize match sizes allowing eraser to get some huge red matches with ease.

Pfft. Keep it how it is. I complain about Vegas whooping my ass in pro, but if I tried to play vegas, I'd crash and burn miserably... several times. They're good because they keep at it. Don't just switch to eraser because it's "OP", make like Lu Tze and fuck everyone over with pusher :P

Word. When I started the game I did what most noobs did and played Vegas almost exclusively after realizing I couldn't figure out the others. Then some good Eraser players inspired me to get the hang of Eraser, and I started routinely outperforming my old Vegas runs. Then I noticed some Pusher and Pointman players edging in there above my Eraser scores, and decided to learn Pusher and Pointman. Now I alternate between the two depending on the traffic, and I can almost always outdo my old Eraser scores. When I get dethroned on a song where I already had a really good score, it's usually Pusher or Pointman doing it, sometimes Eraser and very rarely even DV will squeeze in there. (DV's the only one I can't seem to master.)
