Been playing Portal:prelude, and damn is it infuriating. Please don't make maps like those.
Austria is just like Yorkshire, but they have bigger hills.... oh and they have real snow too

It gets better later on. I couldn't actually do the first few and had to use no_clip. Most of the others I managed without cheating though.

The original Portal maps are mostly working out what to do then spending maybe 3 or 4 attempts to do it. Portal: Prelude is 30 seconds working out what to do then 10 minutes of frustrated missing because you didn't turn round quite quick enough.
Again, as I said before, I appreciate the amount of work put into it and there are some good puzzles in there, but the twitch ones completely ruined it for me.

No idea. I remember being immensely frustrated at the first few puzzles. There are solutions to all of them on youtube though.
The one where you have to duck whilst flinging, I'm not really sure how you're supposed to work that one out...
Then I spent about 20 minutes trying to do the twitch fling up/fire portal thing a little later before I checked youtube, spent another 20 minutes attempting it then just used no_clip because I realised I simply didn't have the mouse control to successfully navigate that part of the test.

That was shortly after it came out though. I don't know if they updated it or something since then and I might be able to manage it now.

It is worth a look, despite what my negative comments, a lot of work has gone into it and it's interesting to compare to the official Portal maps. You get an idea just how much work valve put in to getting them right.
Those that are broken are a good lesson in how not to make Portal levels if you're interested in experimenting with the authoring tools as well.

depending on the puzzle yes.

and btw the gap isnt bottomless it just has a fog_volume on it so you cant see the bottom and it kills you before you get to the bottom.

Well yeah, but Wheatley calls it like that at some point in the game iirc ;)

'bottomless' as overstatement

That depends on what you mean by shortly.  I know what you mean about the twitch and stuff, I couldn't get it either after huge periods of trying and that was a big complaint about some of the levels.  So they released a 1.1 update that fixed a bunch of stuff like that.  It also, sadly, removed 'rock you like a hurricane' from the radios in favor of the old still alive bit you can hear in the actual game, a move that legally is fair but canonically makes no sense whatsoever.

I took the previous advise, and no-clipping past all twitch stuff. Falling for ages in a very short distance to aim a portal at a surface you can barely see just isn't fun.

Just played some of Portal: Prelude again and wow. Just... Wow.
When I completed the fairly simple test involving the first energy ball in the game and got mobbed by turrets on the way to the elevator I killed it. I don't do games that throw dick moves at you like that.
Mmm, ragequit. Not done that in a long while. :P

There's a lot of "challenges" which involve being shot more than solving anything from what I've played.
The maps are well designed though and some of the puzzles are done nicely. The VO isn't too shabby either.
