change the videos from windows media to a more open standard

I personally don't really care about an open standard here, I don't see any end user benefits - unless there is an Audiosurf SDK for mods planned ;).
The main problem is the usage of DirectShow within the game - it's almost guaranteed that there will be codec issues and there is almost no way to predict the behavior of every single possible codec or filter.

I would simply prefer if the videos would be displayed without the possibility that external video-filter could influence them.

It looks like my problem is something entirely different. No messed up video. Audiobrowser works fine. Can see the track, and since disabling ffdshow, can see my ship, the only thing wrong with the game now is that I can't see the blocks.

I can confirm all three cases. Works exactly the same for me.
+1.

Confirmed here also.

Regarding video issues. I know that audiosurf devs didn't make the graphics engine (Quest3D is used). But perhaps it'd be possible to persuade Q3D devs to link to FFMPEG instead of using DShow to decode videos.

Since FFMPEG is LGPL, it should be no problem to link to it, and use libavc to decode everything needed.

Do you see any blocks on the soundmap after the loadingscreen? or maybe just an empty grid showing start and finish locations? or are the blocks just missing on the track? does your car move?

Well, I had the same problem, with the audio selection text weird and after that the song flat, and no blocks at all, so I tried the thing, that was suggested, to try two times a character without the instruction video and then rollback, but it didn't work for me. So I tried the stupidest thing ever..I just moved the videos. I thought it will give me some errors of missing files, but....IT WORKED..and the problem was solved..well for me..for now..this is enough, because I don't seem to need these videos, just try what the character does.

So hopefully it helps..well of course, till it is repaired ;)

Yes, it seems like those videos are the culprit and we are working on a fix.

Here is someone else who deleted his videos and fixed that bug:

The track is shaped properly, my ship moves forward, and I can even see the lines on the track for elongated notes. Simply no blocks.

I've gotten the "White Screen" "Black Screen" thing and it seems to be that the game messes up with the background colors. If you know the game started and it does that, pause it and change background color from "Autoselect" and try the other options. Whenever it does it to me it seems that one out of the three colors works and only that particular one. Also, it only seems to happen if I change the colors a lot manually or change classes a lot (since casual is white, pro is black and elite is grey) but that's how I fix it. Try it and see if it fixes your blank screen problem.

Hmm okay, can you pick them up even? Sounds like a graphical related problem, what graphic card you use? you have the latest drivers? Is it always like this or have you had it working once earlier?

I can pick them up, yes. It's definitely a graphical problem, but I've tried new drivers, old drivers, drivers of people with the exact same card, and it's been like this ever since I tried to play in beta weekend 1.

EDIT: I supposed I should cover all the usual bases. No, I haven't overclocked my card, no I'm not using some crazy joobie third party drivers, and yes the card works fine in everything else.

To be honest, the game is SOMEWHAT playable. But the blocks are replaced with small lines that are hard to see. One interesting thing is that it runs really choppily (20fps) for a bit then whacks up to 60 and stays there.

As if life couldn't get any better, after updating to the latest drivers I'm now getting a Quest3D error on startup.

Oh no!

Well if you want suggestions here they are, in case you haven't tried these things. A cache validation might be a good start. Sorry again for all the troubles--Dylan is working on a fix.

    1) Exit steam and restart
    2) if that fails, exit computer and restart
    3) if that fails, delete local copies and redownload

This works for most people but some people still have an error. If you are running Windows 2000, the game does not support Windows 2000, but you might want to check out this thread for ideas of how to make it work:

You may also want to try out closing out Steam and logging in as an administrator:

Also you may want to do what's suggested in this forum--try the last cache validation step first:

If you were playing the cracked beta you might want to check out:

I'm sure Dylan is working really hard on fixing this less-than-perfect release and since one of Steam's greatest features is its easy update delivery: Is it already possible to tell when we can expect the next update for Audiosurf. Even with all the workarounds, Audiosurf is so unreliable that all its bugs keep crushing the fun of this game.
I actually would even prefer minor daily updates that fix at least a few issues to what is on my harddrive right now.

He's working on it as fast as he can, and we'll need to test it aggressively beforehand to make sure it doesn't screw anything more up (you're on my list of high priority testers freibooter!). So I can't give you a date but I assure you we want these problems fixed just as much as you do.
