The Descent Community Album music suggestion
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:41:34 pm »
Well, long before Steam even existed, some bros from the Descent community got together and made a descent inspired soundtrack, respectively called the Descent Community Album.

The album IS free, but the only site hosting it was Planetdescent.com, hosted by Gamespy. The server became corrupt, and because Gamespy did not support Descent anymore, they did not have a backup to restore.

However, the senior members of PD.com made their own site, Planetdescent.net, who happen to have the DCA in their file hosting section. Oh boy do I have some suggestions.

First and foremost:
Track 3: Work Edge by Verran Eventide
-This song is a techno-electronic song with both bass and treble composition with multiple instruments. The setup of the song gives it an incredibly steady, fun, and high-tempo ride in the major segments. There is no lack of colored blocks in Mono, it is easy to avoid the greys, but trying to get the colored blocks is treacherous, and the flow of having to make these attempts goes well with the music. I could not suggest a better song than this from the DCA.

If you are wondering, yes that is a oriental language the dude is speaking next to the end. In Descent, the PTMC HQ is in Seoul.

Track 7: Light Improv by REV
-This is a two instrument Jimi/Bob esque 'jamin' song, consisting of a bass heavy electric guitar and a standard drum set. The song is an easy ride, but the jumps can end your streak real fast if you aren't feeling it, "Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel" -Jimi Hendrix. It lasts a good 5 minutes and has a varying tempo and the guitar notes do NOT sound like someone made them with a MIDI synthesizer, unless the bro used a MIDI guitar. Even if you don't enjoy the ride, the song it self is excellent listening.

Uh, about the MIDI thing, all the songs in D1 and D2 are synth files (like MIDI).

Hope you guize like it. I know I did

Only PC Version is.

Descent 1 and Descent 2 have CD Audio tracks too.

Descent 1 it is only at the MAC and PSX versions, and descent 2 the CD Version of the game.

Watch the score I got on Venus Atmospheric Lab with Ninja Mono :D

That was a coloured block paradise :D

Oh and the midis. Are that the OPL3 ones?

Here are the OPL3 ones and they are much better than sc55 which dxx-rebirth offers as addon on mainpage.

opl is a synth system and font made by yamaha. it has a lot of channels but has terible sound choice, it is only good for chiptune-like songs

no, they arn't, the opl tracks do not fit descent's atmosphere at all, i thought that the first time I ever heard them. general midi is greatly prefered over opl in a lot of things. opl died fast after the third and final build. general midi is built around sound manipulation: doing more with less. opl doesn't have a lot of options. opl is an adlib sort of system. there are very few games that make good use of anything adlib. tyrian is the only game i would say that sounds very good using adlib, or even opl for that matter.

This is the file structure I have:

Code: [Select]
01._descent_theme_mac.mp3
02._mission_briefing_mac.mp3
03._level_finished_mac.mp3
04._ending_credits_mac.mp3
05._lunar_outpost_mac.mp3
06._lunar_scilab_mac.mp3
07._lunar_military_base_mac.mp3
08._venus_atmospheric_lab_mac.mp3
09._venus_nickel-iron_mine_mac.mp3
10._mercury_solar_lab_mac.mp3
11._mercury_core_mac.mp3
12._mars_processing_station_mac.mp3
13._titan_mine_mac.mp3

And I'm quite sure, this is the title names and order how they're on the MAC / PSX CD.

Maybe you can tell me on which levels which song plays? I'd really like to know, because I dont know the MAC version, so I of course know only about the midis.

The OPL3 Songs sound great. you should try them!
Great detail and quality.

You think these for example have bad quality?

I didnt hear Descent Midis so far in better quality. Pls listen them and tell me, if you stay with your opinion.

No bro, the songs are not for particular levels. Descent 2 proves that with its mere 4 songs (not the Redbook).

Also, you must be using a terrible MIDI font for your system. I use CT2MGM.SF2 (2GMGSMT Rev N++) that comes with the LiveDrvPack from Creative (I use a SB Live! CT4800-ish, one of the 4800 series), and load it using the AudioHQ SoundFont sound font manager program.

OPL3 may sound like it has good quality, but if you have the right midi font, it's nothing. The SC55s are ok if you don't have the particular sound font I mentioned earlier.

The Attachments are the original OPL tracks from the DESCENT.HOG file. Extracted using DTX. Play them, you won't like it.

What the fuck? those songs are the OPL3? then what the hell is my sound card playing? this is major bullcrap.

No bro, the songs are not for particular levels.
They're. Like the Midis. I watched the "Lets Play" by "efreye" on youtube and there was always a specific song per level. (like with the midis)
I know that in later levels a previous song comes again of course. But every level has its specific song. Like with the midis.
Or do you mean, they play in the order, how they're on my HDD?

The Attachments are the original OPL tracks from the DESCENT.HOG file. Extracted using DTX. Play them, you won't like it.
That seem to be low quality versions of the midis. They sound just terrible, yes..

What the fuck? those songs are the OPL3? then what the hell is my sound card playing? this is major bullcrap.

Yes its OPL3. And OPL3 CAN play this quality. I wonder what the attachments are meant for? They must be for a very slow pc (low quality sound)

Are that the one and only midis existent in Descent?

If so, then its really due to high quality FM chips on that soundcards from that time. But even my Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 card does play midis in significant better quality normally. It really seems to be just low quality ones.

tl;dr

Anyhow, there are only TWENTY TWO MIDI tracks for Descent, and there are THIRTY levels.

There are the HMP files which are a sort of MIDI file, the actual MIDI files and then the HMQ FM mixes.

I used DOSBOX and ran the D1 SETUP system, it uses GAME12.MIDI as a music test. It sounds the same as the ones you presented to me. It must use the standard MIDI, and the FM mixes are NOT OPL.

Anywho, here is the soundfont I use for standard midi. It is the most epic thing, ever.

??? What means that?

It seems you still dont understand :(
Read what I've written and for the midis at least you should know that every level has its specific song.... How said of course there are levels which use both the same music. But they have all its specific song and not a random one or sth like that..
So yeah, 8 Songs are twice in the game. and with the CD audio even more are twice. But that doesnt change the fact that every level has its specified song.

And I just wanted to know which song of the CD Audio plays on each level, nothing more :D

It depends on which cd you are using.(I am assuming this is Descent 2 for the computer)

If you are using the original, well, I don't know, but Ratez plays for the boss levels

If you are using the second release or the Definitive Collection, they play in order, overrided only by Techno Industries for the boss levels.
