Advanced environment, instead of only skybox
« on: December 19, 2010, 06:06:04 am »
I dont know about you, but I dont really "feel" the downhills. Because its just a skybox.

You only see it coming because of the track shape and maybe even an uphill before it, but directly after you entered the downhill it ends up, that you only know that its downhill but you dont really see it anymore.

Imagine it would be a normal street in a city. Maybe like the City in Need For Speed 1 or any other environment.

And the greys could be traffic cars you have to avoid :)

Imagine what a great feel it would be with the hills, turns and all that...

......And maybe even with Cops you have to win against for example by letting them crash into a grey(traffic car) or such. :D

No really. It would make the speed feeling, hill feeling, game experience / variation and fun much better in my opinion :)

Maybe instead of a ship to fit its better you should maybe be then a car too and it produces tire rubber (and maybe sound of it (tires, crashes into traffic, cop sirene) too) physics of course the same, otherwise it wouldnt work with music (logical).

I would love this :)

I'm looking forward to your opinions to this :)

That would be a racing game.... not Audiosurf
Austria is just like Yorkshire, but they have bigger hills.... oh and they have real snow too

Why?

All other would still be the same.

Effects, colored blocks, speed, track shape and so on depended on music all like on audiosurf.

Audiosurf is about a pizza (??) delivery guy who needs to collect blocks to recycle them into breathable air. It's not a car racing game.

pls answers from other peoples :(

You dont get it, that it wouldnt change the gameplay itself :(

Did you assume that, because of the traffic cars/cop cars I mentioned? What would be your opinion if I wouldnt have mentioned that?

And he works for Pizza the Hutt.

Green = listening, red = surfing

I also think it'd change the game way too much... Maybe you want a music-based Need For Speed?

What it would change?

Its just an environment advancement

I dont see the gameplay change  ???

Of course the greys which I mentioned to traffic, it wouldnt move like in audiosurf.
Or maybe complete without traffic or such.

Just the environment advancement, so that you have better feel of speed and downhills...

What is about that?

With only that addition of an environment instead of only to have that skybox I especially wouldnt see the gameplay difference  ???

(a music based NFS how you say would be cool too xD)

no really it would be so nice if you would feel more, than just to see that skybox where downhills arent really felt.

I think you are trying to change too much of the game. There is an element that could be taken though.
If you used the music to pre-generate a landscape you drove across, it could work, but it wouldn't look particularly realistic.

What is important to understand here though is that Dylan tried quite a few different graphical styles (and gameplay options) before settling on the current. One of the original concepts was for a highway with the blocks being other cars and another was to have 'enemies', but it distracts from the more 'pure' form of the game which exists now.

Sometimes when making games it's better to strip away concepts. You have to ask whether a gameplay element adds anything to the game or if it's there just because you personally think it looks cool.

That would already be great. How said its not necessary with traffic/cops , that just an further thought thrown in idea by me.

The one and only main request was to have something more than just a skybox so you have actually the feel of a real road with real feeling of speed and downhills and all. I would love it this way and if its only that I dont see very much a gameplay change :/

If it looks realistic it doesnt matter me much ^^

You can always make the skysphere look different on the top and bottom, so you get a different backing depending on if you're going up or down.

As Mincus said, the games was originally about cars, and there's still some of the subtle elements left, but it's not a racing game. You don't control the speed, or steering (just lane) and so as a pseudo racing game, it would confuse the situation.

I dont think it would be confusing. I mean you would just have a scenery in addition to skybox, a real environment how said ^^

An alternative skybox doesnt manage it to feel the downhills, its the same like the black one :( (simply because its just an image and so its very logical it doesnt work^^)

Or the track is a rollercoaster with a scenery? On a rollercoaster you arent able to control speed either :P

Wow. I can feel the insanity of the idea going through my head. I can't imagine anything like that kind of idea. What have you been playing recently?

You could attach some servomotors to your desk and chair, and link them into AS, such that you physically tilt with the game's 'hills'.

lol Good one. Anyway, I would suggest playing Audiosurf while driving.
