Highly needed feature in the results browser
« on: February 15, 2008, 04:38:43 pm »
First of all, awesome game. But I noticed something that can easily break much of the fun.
While browsing the results after surfing a few songs, I couldn't help to notice the need for this (or something similar):

A request- or vote-feature to merge obviously identical songs that are separated by small naming variations (often parentheses or dashes make up tons of variations).

There are tons of entries out there already that really is the same track. People's files are named slightly different from each other.

Do you recognize the problem? What are your thoughts about such a feature?

Yes, fuzzy text search. I'm working with musicbrainz to make this happen.

People should autotag their songs before loading.

winamp's autotag is pretty reliable.

single song:
file-info * click autotag button.

batch submission:
select songs in playlist * right click any * choose 'send to:' * choose 'autotag'
verify matches and apply changes.

oh.. and a feature request - utf-8/international filesystem support.
audiosurf fails miserably in this regard with unicode filenames.

Nice, but I meant not only when you search but the results that appear after you played a song should be merged with the other entries.

I'm sorry, I'm not going to change how I sort my own music to keel to a game. The game, theoretically, should be able to keel to me, as it were.

I agree with a merge request. Also, the problem is that it looks by artist - name. That's all. And unlike Winamp when you transfer to an Mp3 player, it doesn't 'guess' based on the file name, rather it just gives 'unknown' if the artist field is blank, and uses the entire file name as the title. So even though I played Still Alive, I was the only one on the score board, since I was using my own version...

I'll grant a place in the board doesn't matter too much, but it'd be nice for the few tracks that other people would play that I could compare, without having to change how I do things on my end. Unfortunetly, there seems to be no way ti use the file data instead since even different encodes of the exact same track give different results, not to mention different masterings, slight silence, etc...

winamp's autotag doesn't guess based on the filename, it uses the gracenote cddb to modifiy the id3 tags only. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gracenote

I'm not even sure how it recognizes them. you can rename a song to moo.mp3, it will still recognize it.

I've only had a couple of false positives with it, out of countless queries.

Sorry, I was talking about when transfering to an mp3 player, not the button you press when you goto into info. They are totally different.

I've had plenty. It seems to do worse when there's a similar enough file name to something....other times it gets it from something way off. *shrug*

Davids:

The fuzzy text search is for getting a common musicbrainzid for a song before sending in the score.
