This 'world' business the Americans have is annoying. America is not the world, you can not be a world champion in an event which involves just one country.

True, but that's what they call it here in the US.  Marketing is king, lol.

Football (our football) and soccer (your football) are two entirely different sports. I believe it was called football because the ball is easier to send into the stratosphere with a kick than the traditional sphere.

As for the name difference, I assume that soccer and (our) football were both created before the US and Europe could quickly communicate. Australia has their own form of football as well.

Rook to E6. Check.

I smell a derail.

-snip-

Indeed Australia has a sport known as Aussie rules.

Football was in Britain before America, because the people who left here took it over, and somewhere along the line bastardised it.

However I care not for the sport as it's full of overpaid prima donnas who are a waste of space.

I request a title change, as I as an American feel offended and discriminated against.

Also, how America seems to think they're the only country in the world.
Epic title, more so than the whole of America

Not cool. How'd you like it if I started a thread titled (for instance) "Englishmen are all snobby cricket-playing bastards with horrible teeth. Discuss."

Well, it's kinda different, since the title isn't as offensive as "bastards" and "horrible teeth", in fact, it's not meant to be offensive at all, but I get your point. Title changed.

I'd LOL, because it's mostly true, at least we don't think the sun shines from our arses.

Iirc, American football (your football) and football (our football) came about the same time.
Originally football was "association football", hence where the 'soccer' comes from.

I forget more than that. As with almost everything connected to both sports, the history really is tedious.

hmm nice we got a American Euro war going now it is always nice not being dragged into these.

and in Canada it is a bit more confusing officially there is soccer and football(American) which is how you would hear it named on tv and radio but in person most people refer English football as football.

p.s.
since it is getting cold out i think i will stick to flicking a puck around the ice and knocking any opposing player that give me a bad look into the boards.
