Can't play for more than 30 seconds.
« on: August 13, 2010, 07:47:35 am »
Every time i launch audiosurf, i can get to the menus, and start playing a song. However, about 5-30 seconds into the song, the game locks up, but the music still plays. I've tried reinstalling (about 3 times), updating windows and my graphics drivers, no luck. What gives?

But it works fine on linux.

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260, Forceware 258.96
4GB DDR2-800 RAM

Try running it at different graphics levels.

Also, do you have any processes running that take up a massive amount of memory at the time? (Other than AS itself)

What's your processor clock?

My processor is clocked at 3.5GHz, but audiosurf has run before on that clock.

EDIT: Tried it on minimal and all other detail settings, still locks up.

Good day NearlyEpic, you mentioned that you have your video drivers up to date. But i have another idea:

Try downloading the latest directX from microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

I know that W7 comes with DX11 automaticly, but there are still missing libraries, but by installing directx, you get all the extra dll files you may need.

----------------

Also another not reccomended solution for you is:

If your windows is still fresh, and you have x86 (32bit) windows, to install it in order to avoid further problems with software in WOW64 systems.

Good luck, let me know if you still experience your problem, also I apologise for my poor english.

Tried updating DirectX, didn't work.

If only audiosurf used OpenGL...

There have been reports in the past that Audiosurf has problems on overclocked systems. If you are OCing, running at stock might fix it.

My only question is, why would it not work now, when it had worked in the past?

I've had my processor OC'd from the first week i got this computer.

Because badly written software is unpredictable and you're running Windows and Quest3D. :P

Verify game cache files?

Also - It's your thread, you can necro it if you want to.

If you have 2 or more CPU's try to:

1) CTRL+ALT+DEL
2) Select QuestViewer.exe
3) Set Affinity
4) tick only one CPU to work on it and see what the result is. Good luck.

Setting the affinity seems to have worked, though that's the last thing i would have thought of. However, do I have to do this every time i want to play, or can i edit a configuration file for the game?

Well yes, only if you don't feel special enough to request from me a .dll file which will be doing this option for you automaticly?

(And yes i am a programmer.) Good luck.

Edit:

Another good solution is to downgrade to 32bit (x86) Windows 7. You will not experience headaches with AS or many other software which can't run on x64 because it's not popular and coded badly. I do not say that ASurf can't work on 64bit, just that 64bit gives much headache.

I just need to say, I have been running Win7x64 for 11 months, and not had an issue. I don't know what these headaches are.

Win7 handles both 32 and 64bit games with no issue, including Audiosurf.
