"Premium" Mode
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:04:06 pm »
I have an Intel quad machine, so I expect the "Premium" mode to run alot faster and smoother than old Chris Mullen driving to the basket for a layup...  The mode below it runs great, but when I switch to "Premium" mode it's like a nuclear meltdown, and smooth as jagged rocks.  Anyone offer me answers on this?

Very simple, my dear friend.

Quest3D is the iTunes of non-apple software.

Unfortunately Quest3D (which Audiosurf uses) is a little unpredictable on some setups. Where it should run sooperfast it runs like a dog for no obvious reason.

The first obvious step is to try a verify (see the sticky in Troubleshooting).
Updating video drivers is the next.
Some people have reported problems when they have components overclocked, so if it is, try again running everything at stock speed.
Sometimes Windows gets in the way a bit and trying after a reboot with nothing else running can sometimes work.
Try unplugging all peripherals except mouse and keyboard.
If you've switched on anti-aliasing try switching it off, it occasionally causes problems.

Hopefully one of those will work.

Quest3d is (I think) pretty dependent on the amount of RAM your system has, so if you've only got like 512k of RAM, it's no surprise that AS won't run.

Be lucky to have a useful DOS system in 512K. ;)

Okay, maybe I meant megabytes.

At least I didn't say 512p.

Dumb me, I meant "Premium" mode, "Enhanced" mode is my brain because it's what I always have to switch to to make Audiosurf not run like a dog...

Premium uses some hefty shaders so needs a recent graphics card to run well. Anything lower than a 200 series nvidia card or 2000 series ati card (maybe? I'm not so well versed in ati cards, might need to be more recent) will probably struggle to give a good framerate.

ah that makes more sense.

on my set up a amd quad @ 2.8 ghz, 6gb ram and a geforece 9800gtx+ it still runs fast enough have a good game experience on premium mode but enhanced runs noticeable faster.

and for puzzlers i stick to enhanced anyway since i find the light burst, glow and motion blur to be distracting when trying to due a good pointman run.

AS, well, Q3D has some nice memory leaks, so more RAM the merrier as far as running it is concerned.
Austria is just like Yorkshire, but they have bigger hills.... oh and they have real snow too
