Problem with identifying music
« on: May 01, 2010, 02:53:13 pm »
Back in 2007 or so we purchased a CD. Somewhere along the line (probably during a move) the disc was damaged. We made a back up of it, salvaging what we could, and tossed the broken CD. Now that I'm listening to / surfing music, I decided to rip that backup.

Problem: none of the tracks are identifiable. I know what album it's supposed to be, but there are SEVEN releases of that album. Compounding things include the fact that the tracks seem out of order and that all of the tracks are slightly longer than the Music Brainz's website says they should be. Also, I only speak English and this music isn't, so I'm not having luck matching lyrics. Lastly, the releases of this album all had a different number of tracks, and the number of tracks on the backup doesn't match any release.

I'm thinking I should just pick up another copy of the album. $12, counting shipping. Any other solutions?

How much "longer" does MusicBrainz say they are?

Also - try other CDDBs if you can. MusicBrainz might not have your particular version onhand (is it rare?)

Green = listening, red = surfing

The songs are anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds longer than the ones Music Brainz listed.

And no, it's not rare. Amazon has 50+ copies ATM.

If you're willing to pay the extra 12 bucks for a brand new CD, I'd recommend it. If you wanna focus on fixing that up, get the exact song list for that particular CD on Amazon and see if you can rip it into Windows Media Player. Many people won't like to hear that, but I personally find it to be better that the toohns.
Audiosurf is like a mix of tetris, need for speed and pot... Look at all the colours, dude!

Tried that. The CD was released several times, with 8, 12 or 14 songs. The backup only had 11, and the only song I could identify was track #2 on the backup but #3 or #5 on the releases. WMP came up with "Unknown Album, Unknown Artist" :(

I just ordered another copy off Amazon; there were a few other things I was thinking of getting there so I just added it to the cart.
