[SOLVED] Networking PC's
« on: March 15, 2010, 12:53:23 am »
If the admins don't want this on their forums, feel free to delete this thread. I just noted that many of the people who frequent the forums are quite helpful when it comes to things like these...

I'll keep it simple. I have a NETGEAR CG418WG Wireless Modem-Router (pretty standard router) supplied to me by my ISP. I would like to know how I can interact between my HP Mini, connecting to the router via wireless (or even if I plug a lan cable in it) to my PC, connected via LAN. I'm pretty sure it's possible, I have looked around but no tech sites or NETGEAR mauals have been entirely helpful.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Set both PCs to have the same workgroup (my comp>properties), the router will deal with setting IPs in the same range and the same subnet mask. You can search for the other machine in 'network places' or if you know it's IP you can enter this into the address bar of explorer. Assuming networking isn't disabled on the router.

You can also network via a crossover cable (more tricky though, not hard, just need to manually assign IPs)

ya more than possible,

what kinda of interaction do you want, GUI or CLI Access or just file and print shareing.

edit:
H3x posted at the same time as me ya for files sharing you can just do what he said and it will give access to the shared documents folder across the network than you can right click other folder on the system and set them up to share if you want anyother folders to be shared. and all of this can be accessed through my network places.

and an other note

some applications cant access files dirctly from the network places so if that ever happens you can use the map network drive option in my computer to have the network share act excatly like a harddrive.

Hey, thanks for your support guys. BUT YOU'RE ALL WRONG!! Well, at least that's what my PC's saying to me. A screenie....

Now, how come it's in explorer if it doesn't connect? I've checked over many times now, the workgroup on both is STUFF, there shouldn't be any problem in terms of the modem and my HP mini can't connect to the workgroup. I've made sure file sharing is turned on on both PC's but nothing seems to ahve really helped. Anybody got any ideas?

Oh, and ViRUS, it should be our.

Any active firewalls on your HP blocking access to the device ?
First, try it with firewalls disabled - if it works, then you'll need to punch some holes in your firewall.

I imagine you see the HP_NET because the "Here I am"-Packets go out and are received by your machine, however the HP doesn't allow incoming connections on the needed ports (If I recall correctly, ports 137,138,139,445 need to be open).

If this doesn't solve the problem, I think it'd be best if you could provide us with some Wireshark logs, so one could see which device doesn't want to play along.

Looks like a firewall to me. Disable it and if you can connect, either make some rules in your firewall manually, or stick it in learning mode and get it to ask questions, then click allow when you try to access the network.

prolly a firewall but somtimes machines wont broadcast them selfs right so go in a file browser and try entering //the machine you want to connect to local ip//

lol if someone's already mentioned firewall, why do two other people have to input something that is completely non helpful? But thanks for the advice. I use Zone Alarm firewall on both PC's and I have tried disabling the firewall on both PC's and it hasn't seemed to have worked. I didn't link a screenie from my XP, but it can't connect to the workgroup. It's as if on that PC, the whole workgroup is non-existant.

And tried passerby's technique. Same issue.

Ugh... ok, update.

My ZA Firewall was off on one PC or the other at any one given time, which is why I wasn't able to connect. I turned my firewall off completely on both PC's and that got it working. I've got a tiny problem of not being able to write on files over the network, but I can deal with that. I'll now re-turn on ZA and set it for over the lan networking.

Thanks a lot, y'all, for the help. I find that this forum can be more helpful than some other tech forums and it's great to see such a friendly community here! [Closed]
