Portal 2
« on: March 05, 2010, 07:40:20 pm »
Thoughts, wishes, hopes, rumors, inside info...

I find it interesting that .3% of Portal owners have the Transmission Recieved achievement.  And I also find it extremely sad that a full quarter of Portal owners haven't gotten to the point where you recieve the fully powered ASHPD.

THANK YOU FOR ASSUMING THE PARTY ESCORT SUBMISSION POSITION.

Go to it.

Because only 50 people bought the game, the rest downloaded it.

Just had a thought during lunch:  how cool would it be if(and don't tell me I'm wrong, this is a hypothetical situation) Portal 2 WAS Half-Life 2 Episode 3?  And the co-op was Chell and Gordon working together, both keeping the mechanics from their respective games?  Chell can't take much damage(but her low health max is reached by regeneration quickly), but she is a stunt maniac with the ASHPD and can still do some neat things to enemies with portals.  Gordon, well, is Gordon, and he takes care of the higher concentrations of enemies while Chell stays behind him.  Would have room for some neat puzzles where Gordon basically has to stay on Chell's heels to follow her through the Portals.

Ignore the problems this would have mechanics-wise(i.e. my network connection is too laggy, I don't have anyone to play with, what if I want to play solo...)  and focus on if those things weren't problems.

I've seen similar ideas before, but imo that would ruin Half Life 2, I hope that doesn't happen D:

From a gameplay perspective it would be cool. Not sure how it would fit in with the HL universe.

Of course, to play it single-player you could always just control the portal player. Running round shooting things whilst following a character is easily done with bots, placing portals not so much.

There wouldn't be a problem fitting the universes together, because they already are the same universe.  For proof, Black Mesa is mentioned by both GLaDOS and the backstory on AS, and the Borealis is supposed to be in Ep.3(as well as already having been shown in Ep.2).  Who says Chell wasn't taken to the Borealis?  For that matter, who says she wasn't already on it to begin with?

That's what I meant with the "fit in", I've not followed the HL2 episodes so I've no idea where the story goes from there. Getting the two characters together might or might not be a problem, I really don't know, which is why I said I'm not sure. ;)

Just saying that there's nothing preventing it.  Does that mean something that goes as far as my idea will happen?  Almost certainly not.  The point is, it's possible story-wise(and would be awesome gameplay-wise).

At the end of EP2 Alyx mentions taking a helicopter to where Judith is, at the site of the Borealis. Previously Aperture Science is mentioned, as a rival lab to Black Mesa, who were also messing with portals. It is possible for the two [games] to be the same, though the portal gun in HL2 wouldn't work well in my opinion, grav gun AND portal gun.... Although from the end of Portal, your are clearly on land, not a ship in the Arctic. Though VALVe being their usual selves will probably say nothing.

This concept art shows the Borealis with Advisors floating around it, which is about the only thing about EP3 is based on (appart from the other shot VALVe released)

Agreed.

There's always the hack to put the Portal gun in HL2 if you want to mess about. Does tend to lead to breakage though iirc.

Same engine so I would think it's pretty possible

Is it, I've had a mess about with it.
Because the levels aren't designed to cope with it though, you can get some strange results and end up outside the map or in places you shouldn't be and I seem to remember a stability problem.
