Connecting through a proxy network.
« on: February 15, 2010, 06:24:36 pm »
Hey guys. I recently started studying at a college here and am getting pissed off because I can't play in my spare time because the network only allows outside access through a proxy. Is there a way to configure audiosurf files to allow a connection through this proxy?

Something you may want to know:
I can connect to these forums because the proxy is associated with my username and password, so basically I can connect to the internet that way.

ADDED: Sorry, I didn't clarify. I can play the game, but my scores aren't posted up on the network.

Is Internet Explorer (NOT Firefox, etc) configured for this proxy? That MIGHT be all you need.

Yeah, both IE8 and FF3 are. I'm having the same problem with other games. It's not a huge deal as I can walk up to the maccas on the main road, but it would be really nice to play the game here.

ADDED: At the end, it just holds on the connecting to server sign.

AS should take the proxy info from IE, though might be port blocked on the network

Well.... if the port is blocked on the network, is there any way I can bypass that?

port tunneling, though you'd need a pc on the outside to tunnel to

Ooooh... I think that would be possible. Can you link a webpage or some more information about this including legal information? Or does anyone else have any other ideas?

ya just google ssh tunneling

but the problem is that the admins at the collage might not like you bypassing there firewirewall like this if they notice.

cause if they notice the tunnel they wont know what it is for

im pretty sure there just blocking the port it needs

it's the same at my collage i haven't tried AS there but IRC and Torrents dont work there and prolly a few other things.

and my collage uses a similar system when i connect to there wireless it redirects me to there server page when i try to use a webbrowser than i have to use my student id and pass.

your best chance is setting up a ssh tunnel or a vpn connection between your laptop at collage and your home setup

Tunneling isn't illegal, as long as you own the machines being used. Otherwise that comes under the general hacking other peoples machines for your own usage.
Though the system admins are likely to not be happy when they find the tunnel, and you might get in trouble for it.

VPNing home is another option, which should work. Though schools often don't like people bypassing firewalls, as they tend to have them in place for a reason (if only to spoil the fun and prevent gaming).

i wasnt saying tunneling was illegal i was just saying that it could break the policy of the schools network use to bypass the firewall in anyway.

Though I do agree that the school may not like port tunneling

Well I know that they won't like it. It's probably why they won't allow it. But I read up on school policy and the worst that could happen to me is getting suspended from using their network. I just wanted to know if there was anything illegal about it in terms of general law. Thanks for all your help, guys!

no as far as law you own the computers on both sides of the tunnel or vpc connection so your good as far as that goes.
