Audiosurf doesn't detect QT
« on: December 29, 2009, 07:02:00 am »
I just installed Audiosurf on my Win7 machine, and I can't play my .m4a audio files that worked fine in Vista. When I try to load a song, I get the following error message: "Quicktime is required to play the song you selected, but it isn't installed. Get quicktime here (free) : www.apple.com".

I have a perfectly vanilla itunes+qt install on my machine, the only thing I might have done is played with QTs file associations. I can launch QT fine and play my audio files directly in that.

Any suggestions? It would be nice to know how audiosurf detects the presence of QT, because I might just be able to fake it.

EDIT: Tried validating my game cache in Steam. It finds 4 files to update, but QT still isn't detected.

EDIT2: Reinstalling the game didn't help either :(

Find the "iTunes Decoding" box and reverse it's status. (If it's checked uncheck it, and vice versa)

Green = listening, red = surfing

Doesn't help sadly, the checkbox seems to be only for MP3 as it says.

I don't have QT, or anything apple for that matter, and they work for me, try using codec packs such as CCCP or K-lite or QuickTime Alternative

EDIT: DO NOT install more than one pack at a time, as bad things will happen
Austria is just like Yorkshire, but they have bigger hills.... oh and they have real snow too

I still don't know why this is happening to some people, but this workaround has done the trick (once at least):

Right-click QuestViewer.exe (in
steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine) and choose "create shortcut".
Then right-click the shortcut and select properties.  At the end of
the Target field, add " Q3DStart.q3d" (with the leading space, but not
the quotes).  Hit OK.  Now you can double-click the shortcut to launch
the game.  Right-click the shortcut and change settings on the
compatibility tab. Set it to run as administrator.

Also, If you have 32-bit iTunes (and Quicktime) installed on Win7 64-bit, that could be the problem.
