[FIXED]Windows being slow, please help!
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:48:09 pm »
Hey y'all. This isn't an issue with Audiosurf itself, but an issue with the Windows operating system that affects my play of Audiosurf that I thought maybe someone on here could help me out with.

I have a hassling issue where, after about 2-3 hours of having the computer turned on, my PC starts to lag incredibly. I may only have done one thing the entire time, but it will slowly lag more-so as time goes by, until it becomes unbareable. Fixing the problem is as easy as restarting the computer, but having to restart my PC every 2 hours is annoying, especially when I haven't done anything.

My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. If I play audiosurf in this lagging stage, the game will load, I'll select a character, select a song and be given the board. The lag bit happens when the matched blocks get taken up and calculated into the scoreboard. There's no problem playing the game any other time and this lag happens with anything else I do on the PC.

I won't give detail on the specs of the PC, but say that it is brand new. My dad who also has Windows 7 (32-bit) seems to have the same problem. I don't think it would be the graphics card (if it were, restarting the PC would make bugger all difference), I don't think it would be the processor as I have a quad core, so I think it might be the operating system.

Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks a lot.

I'd ask what your system specs are, but you don't want to, though they would help.

You say the issue occurs after a few hours, what do you have running? Sounds like something is slowly eating memory.

If you grab process explorer : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
and add the following column, process memory > private bytes
When the machine lags, what's the % usage of Physical memory, Page file (commit) and which processes have the highest memory usage?
Also enable process performance > CPU history, are there any processes which a large CPU usage?

It's not Windows itself. I run it with no reboot for weeks on end.
It's most likely some app you've installed (or the manufacturer has).
Have you done a fresh reinstall since buying the machine?

I run Win7 64bit as well with no issues.

If you follow my first post and see what's eating CPU and RAM, the issue should be easy to solve

I'll give out my systems specs but I don't think they're necessary is all:
Manufacturer: Built be me!
Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 (2.88Ghz)
Memory: 2x2GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 1TB SATA
Video Card: ASUS ENGTS250 (1GB DDR3)
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
Motherboard: Gigabye EP45T-Extreme with Hybrid SilentPipe

Thanks, h3x, for the program, but I use a similar one called "What'sRunning". Wierd thing is, I don't actually have to do anything on the computer for it to lag after a few hours. If I simply leave it turned on for 2 hours, then get on the PC it'll lag. The increase in memory usage is only minimal (probably normal windows processes starting up), nothing's running the processor, and it's not a virus because the computer's checked with root-kit detectors regularly and the amount of connections to the internet don't increase either.

The process with the highest memory usage (unless I'm playing a game, rendering images or making a movie) is an SVCHOST executable. And what's using the CPU the most is the "System Idle Process"... I mean, this just looks wierd in all senses. Thanks for the help, though.

Process explorer shows processes not just apps running, and thus more helpful imo

System idle process is windows way of showing what's not being used.

Something kicks in after two hours, hmmm, do you have any defrag/archiving/cataloguing software set to kick in after a time out?

What'sRunning is the same.

I know.

Not that I know of. And it's not specific to two hours. It'll be random between about two hours and 5 hours, not dependant on how much I've used the PC. Processes haven't increased, memory's the same, CPU's running normally, don't know what's wrong with it. :(

I need more information to work out what's up.

You'd be best examining system processes, RAM/PF usage from right at boot and when it lags.

Also check your scheduled tasks etc

Well, it's wierd because today it hasn't been laggin, even though I've played two games and had it on for about 4 hours. Memory usage is actually LESS then it was when I made my first post today. I'll see if it spikes when it starts lagging.

Just bumping this up to see if I could get any more help on the subject. It seems to have gotten better since I started talking about it on the forums, but when it does lag, it really annoys me.

Tbh all I can think off is already written, check RAM/PF/CPU usage levels, look for resource hogging apps, scheduled apps etc
