It only counts it when they post a new score to the scoreboard that comes short of your score. So if they play it 10,000 times, but their first run was their best, it will count as 1.
also it shouldn't be "X tried 1 times to beat/dethrone you" but "X tried once to beat/dethrone you"

If every time some played a song, all previous players were notified, it would mean so much work for the server, so only close misses being counted as a 'tried to beat' is a good thing.
Sometimes its not even trying to beat at all, it's just playing for the fun of it.
"X tried X times to pwn you, but they suck and completely failed by # points. Get back to that song and get an even HIGHER score to show them how BAD they're at this game!!!"
