Audiosurf on iPod and I would be set for life
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:18:11 am »
No joke, since the iPods all about music it should already calculate intensity of songs and all that.  The touch circle makes controls easy.  Honestly, I am just "what-iffing" here, but if Audiosurf made it to the iPod I would be so happy.

hehe while it is entirely possible to run programs outside of the normal ipod os, this might be rather difficult. i can really only imagine this working (MAYBE (read: DOUBTFUL (read: im using too many parentheses))) on an ipod touch. even then, the songs would probably have to be pre-analyzed or you might be waiting a while. as it is, the ipod does not already analyze song intensity and all that.
if audiosurf WERE to be ported to the ipod, the entire engine would probably have to be rewritten or another engine would have to be chosen that is capable of running on the ipod hardware. as it stands, i don't think anybody has ever gotten any Quest3D applications running on an ipod.
in short: dream on ;)

Not going to happen. Even if you got it to run which is very, very unlikely without major changes, it would run far too slow.

I toyed with a flash version of Audiosurf for a while - something similar could maybe run on a buffed ipod someday. The only reason I can think of for Apple to increase the ipod's power is to market it as a game machine though. Who knows, maybe they will.

Ahem.

http://www.apple.com/games/ipod/phase/

EDIT: clarification.

Phase is a rhythm game for the ipod that procedurally generates tracks based on songs that you load from your library. It works on an algorithm with the same ultimate function as audiosurf's to create levels for any song.

heh yeah but that still uses precompiled songs etc, not on-the-fly like audiosurf. and it doesnt involve crazy flying around through space and stuffs :P

It does not use pre-compiled songs. It generates tracks based on the beat and melody of the song you load. It works with your music library, not a bundled set of songs. It works really well, in fact.

Yeah, for a moment, I was all 'woah is he serious?'

and then yeah.

And isn't Phase like a disabled three fingered kid's GH? like, GH for three-chord monkeys [forgive the pun] or something?

You mean to say it's optimized for Greenday and Everclear songs? They're great for it!

aha, well, consider it's made for the ipod. You really can't get too complicated with a controller like that and still have a fun game. Of course, it IS made by harmonix, so you should expect it to be similar to Guitar hero, or amplitude/frequency for that matter. It's also a rhythm game, which assumes similarities to DDR, stepmania, etc.

You have to keep in mind, most rhythm games are about hitting notes in time. Audiosurf is the oddball in this genre.

Having played it myself, I'll vouch that phase is an awful lot of fun. It can be a bit tricky to track along the curve of the scroll wheel quickly, though, which makes me wonder if audiosurf would translate very well with a similar control scheme.
