Obnoxiously Tiny Window // Direct3D Failboats
« on: June 03, 2009, 04:47:02 pm »
So, recently my Direct3D failed on me. Anytime I try to run a game in fullscreen on Direct3D (which is pretty much all of them), it just forces itself minimized. Direct3D tests cancel themselves because they think I pressed a key. So I have to run everything in (the much hated) windowed mode. AS still worked OK though.

Recently, Audiosurf, once QuestViewer reads it's game file thingy, goes "QUACK" and turns itself into an obnoxiously tiny window. Resizing just makes it look like a gray box (for my default window color is gray).

I request solutions for both of these.

For Direct3D I have tried:
 - Reinstalling DirectX
 - Updating Graphics Drivers
 - Unplugging my keyboard and my KVM switch from my computer

For Audiosurf I have tried:
 - Verifying
 - Running the .exe directly

The Direct3D tests cancelling sound suspicious.
Have you done a full virus/malware/etc check?

Audiosurf behaves in a similar way when it fails to find Direct3D support, so something is definitely going wrong in that area.
There's always the old "reinstall Windows". ;)

I have a nightly virus check.

lol double toast

I figured out my AudioSurf problem - I had disabled D3D through DxDiag to see if it fixed it, and forgot to turn it back on.

And I found something with my D3D problem - if I disable it, and enable it again, StarCraft (which has no windowed mode) loads fine. But it's too much of a pain in the ass to always do that for one game.

Update: I was wrong about the whole Disable/Enable thing. That one time was a fluke.

I need a Direct3D fix ASAP, please - I can't find my XP disc.

Reinstall the latest version.  Or does that not come with DirectX?

Should have come with DirectX that he states in the first post he's installed.
I'm at a bit of a loss. Were it my machine I'd just tell Windows to fuck off and reinstall the lot. But then this sort of thing happens to me a lot with Windows, so... :P

At this point, I'll even settle for a program that forces DirectX games into a window regardless of fullscreen setting - I know one exists!

gawd, similar prob here. only, that audiosurf now plays in 8-bit physics, and i have to guess where the ship is gonna go next. i have a TON of RAM, and my hard drive is far from cluttered.
