Windows 7 release candidate?
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:30:16 am »
Anyone else tried it yet? I'm thinking of moving to it since I can move to it from vista without having to redo everything.

Will be when it's available to the general public tomorrow.
The beta was fine.
Still all Windows, that is by default it's all a bit crap, but relative to past versions of Windows there is progress, slowly.

I'll ask my roommate if she's willing to deal with Win7, if yes, I'll give it a whirl

Afaik, if you have Windows XP, there isn't really much of a reason to upgrade to Windows Seven. Compared to Vista, it's probably an improvement, however.

I like some of the UI improvements.
It's still not a patch on what you can do using X and many window managers, but it's an improvement on the disaster that is the classic Windows UI.
Mostly it's simple stuff like being able to navigate alt-tab with the cursor keys, having thumbnails of windows in alt-tab and being able to rearrange the order of tasks on the taskbar. I didn't have a problem with Vista on my laptop hardware and 7 just runs smoother than that. Will be trying the RC on my old Athlon XP though, just to see how it runs. ;)

Still has all the classic Windows problems though, like regular BSODs, generally shitty GUI and too much bottom wiping, but it wouldn't be Windows without these problems, since they're common all the way from 3.11 to now. :)

What are you on about Mincus, it's rock stable. I've not had 1 BSOD and I've been using 7000 since it came out, for 12+ hours per day, video encoding, a lot of gaming etc, it's been perfect.

Don't upgrade from 7000 to 7100, it will break Windows and you'll have to re-format anyway.

I've had a few BSODs from it.
No more or less than XP or Vista, albeit in different circumstances.
Just because YOU haven't had any BSODs, doesn't mean no-one has. I admit for a beta it's well polished (especially for MS) but it's still Windows, still has issues and still BSODs for some people on occasion.

I'm using 7100 and didn't have any problems so far, I could even install my super old ESS1969 (sound card) using XP drivers :D

Yeah, the BSODs moving to different places is kind of part of one of the rules of programming:

If it is programmed or compiled, there will be bugs. If a bug is fixed, another bug, usually of similar or lesser quality, will usually be made.
