For the next beta, the competition song...
« on: January 22, 2008, 07:16:45 am »
During the second beta, there was a small competition that seemed to magically take place. Clocks, which was held by Rothon inspired others (including myself) to all suddenly start fighting for the top spot.

Can we do this again... please?

Recommending some good competition worthy songs (nothing over 250 traffic or below 170 would be considered a good range to start) and we could get a ball rolling on something special : )

I  love this idea. Challenge song of the day or even challenge song of the hour.

I would think a longer time span than a day would be better, but not as long as week. It's better over the weekend too.

It would hafta be a song that most people have,

otherwise the challenge would only go to a limited amount of people

Could put it up on the audiosurf radio for a day, but that may require expensive licensing.

I suppose you could do something like use the free tracks from Last Fm for the day.

Same is for Tenacious D - Tribute.

I thought it would be a great song, so i used that one. After a day or so, the highscores were full of people. Perhaps other people had the same idea, or just wanted to fight for the best spot.

But what about difficulty?

Yeah, I sat down and thought about something like this too... you could always get around the expensive licensing by actually having unsigned bands music up for download. That way, they could get some more recognition and we'd get some interesting, fresh and new music circulating on the internet.

There's also other options, but I think this one has the most potential. As for hardness, I suggested a range for traffic already I think. 170 to 270 is seriously a good zone, anything above that isn't worth it.

I agree that if anyone can think of any good indie songs that are available for free on a bands website, that would be a good start.

Speaking of Clocks, what's the link to the highscores?  It's not on the Popular Songs table on the front page.  I wonder if I was still in the lead at the end of the beta.

Nope, I stealthed the song, and then two three others went and met it. I was in the lead for around 5 hours, before someone pipped me by 1000 points. The stealthed score with a match11 was around 80k.
