Valkyrie Sky - Worlds first MMOSHMUP?
« on: February 21, 2009, 07:55:19 pm »
Apparently the worlds first Massively Multiplayer Online Shoot 'em Up game.

You can choose classes, make parties, level up, get items, get weapons/armour. Seems like an interesting concept, not sure if it's the first every MMOSHMUP though. Some do have online capability and LAN play, but not as an MMO I don't think. At least none spring to mind.

Anyway, I've downloaded it and haven't actually started playing yet. I'd be willing to wait if anyone else wants to give it a bash with me. You can group in parties of 4.

Huh, surprised I never heard of it considering it's over a year old at least in the original...

But WTF is with the client DL wanting to install a plugin?

Yeah, don't do that. It insta-crashed my Firefox. Use the "Other browser" one for a direct download link.

Anyway, got to level 3 so far to test it out, it's kinda fun. The boss took like 10+ mins to kill cause I was alone, average game, fun for a bit of play. One of those games where you need others to make it interesting really.

There was nobody else around, or it's got separate servers?

Forced full screen with no option to change it = FAIL.

Plus the music is embredded. The best character is ugly. Plus it has that strange thing that most Korean MMOs seem to have where your char's gender is forced on you based on what you choose when you register.

Not when you register, just unchangeable based on class.

Hellgate: London (Released and since obsolete. Even though it was kickass)
WWII Online (Released '01)
Planetside (Released '03?)

Not the first MMOSHMUP.

You miss-understand the concept of a SHMUP, none of those games are anything like SHMUPs.

If I understand the phrase shoot-em-up, I believe that it would mean this game places a large emphasis on guns and killing masses of other people/ai enemies.  Rather than any logical goal.

Touhou is a perfect example of Shoot 'em Ups.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdiauCLYm0U First vid on YouTube.

You usually control a ship or character that "flies". The game either scrolls vertically or horizontally, enemies fly onto the screen and shoot at you, you have to dodge the bullets and shoot them. Enemies drop stuff that normally go to upgrading your ship with more power, or more lives, bombs etc. Background is just fancy which could be clouds/sky on horizontal and the ground as vertical with various things going past. Very popular as arcane games, you should be able to find at least 1 example of a SHMUP in any arcane.

Hellgate: London is an RPG, WWII Online is an MMOFPS, and so is Planetside.

Ah, I see. I thought "shoot em' up" was some strange British term, such as "bloody booglet" or "sixes and sevens", or any one of those.
How do you make that into an MMO?! Thats very strange.

Look at the gameplay video.

From what I can gather, you gather a group of players in a fairly typical 3rd person view, then you all play the same mission together for the shoot-em-up part.
Then you upgrade your player in a rather RPG manner before moving onto the next mission with either the same group or a different one.

I tried watching it, but it didn't make much sense. Video is too low quality for me to understand much about it.

No idea what a booglet is, and sixes and sevens is cockney rhyming slang, if you want to know more about cockney rhyming slang, watch this episode of QI: http://www.guba.com/watch/3000131396
