Random Glitched Overlay in Premium Mode
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:57:08 pm »
I recently upgraded from a GeForce 8600 GT to a 9800 GT and now in premium mode I get a random graphic overlayed on the screen when playing.

Pictures:

The graphic is different every time I open Audiosurf. As you can see in #2, there are no glow effects despite it being premium mode. It seems that Audiosurf is failing to initialize and write to the buffer it uses for the glow effects, resulting in a random glow overlay.

System:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
RAM: 3.50GB DDR2
Video: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT (Evga)
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3

I've verified and defragmented my game cache. I've tried tweaking the AA. I haven't reinstalled yet but I doubt that would help.

So, is this a problem with the game or should I be returning my card? Problem with the card doesn't seem likely. I've played Half-Life 2 Episode 2 on maxed settings with no issues. If it is a problem with the game, could it be fixed? If anything else is needed (System Information .nfo files, memory dumps, etc.) I'd be happy to provide it.

When you say "tweaked" AA, in what way? Turning it off completely should help. Also play on Normal or Enhanced, instead of Premium.

Yes, I've turned off AA completely with no effect. I'm playing without premium for now, but I don't want to do that forever. I like the premium graphics and I seem to play better when they're on.

This is due to nVidia drivers, it's happening for a lot of people (including me). We will have to wait until Dylan or nVidia fixes this problem.

Just did it Devil_Spawn. For some reason though, they only have bug reports for Vista, which is kind of stupid. But anyway I sent in a report.

Ah, sorry for making a new thread then. It's not easy to search for this error.
Anyways, would downgrading the drivers to some older version fix it? I have 178.24.

well, nobody had any problems with nVidia and Audiosurf using the 175.19 drivers, you should try those if you don't have any problems with using outdated drives.

Also, if you rollback your drivers, make sure to fully uninstall the 178.24 first and I would recommend to clean the registry and use the cleaning utility of CCleaner...
