Game constantly pauses in fullscreen mode.

When I'm playing Audiosurf in fullscreen mode, every 6-15 seconds the game pauses for a split second which a lot of the time results in missing or hitting the wrong block. I've done some troubleshooting and closed every background program, but eventually with everything closed except the bare essentials, I figured out that changing it to windowed was the only thing that helped.

Right now, I'm going to try and resize windowed mode to my whole screen with my new found knowledge off the support section. Has anyone else had this problem, or is this only me? I'd hate for anybody less technical to be having this problem and never have it come to light.


Edit: Looks like it's happening, even with windowed mode now. It was either that one song that wasn't pausing constantly or me resizing the window brought back the bug.

Edit2: Yeah, now it's making me angry enough to quit playing until I can fix this.

It may or may not have just surfaced, I haven't played in a while but I do remember having problems with it freezing every now and then months ago, but nothing this annoying I don't think.

Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2
3072MB ram
Maximus Forumula motherboard, integrated audio

Other games don't freeze, only Audiosurf.

Edit: Oh, and I've reinstalled audiosurf multiple times.

Usually when a Windows install is coming to the end of its life (about 6 months for me).
The problem seems to be that Audiosurf eats lots of CPU power and Windows gets bored and causes lots of spikes in CPU usage when it needs a reinstall. The two together cause the issues you see.

Rebooting the machine sometimes helps but the only (semi-)permanent solution I've found is to reinstall Windows. At least until it gets finicky again.
Annoying but go kick MS until they fix Windows. ;)

I've got a q6600, Audiosurf shouldn't eat that much. I've done a windows repair about a day ago as well.

But remember that Audiosurf only uses one core of that Q6600 ;)

Also, what do you mean by Windows repair? A full reinstall or something else?

Not sure what you mean by a "Windows repair".

Unless it's a clean install though I doubt it will have the same effect.

Anyway, it might be something else, just that I've found those sorts of problems occur with an old Windows install.

It needs to update the track geometry on the videocard periodically, so that could be it. If so, running at Normal detail should help a lot.

The squid hits performance a bit. Maybe you're getting a framerate hit whenever the squid (at the very end of the track) becomes visible?

Well my windows repair fixed all the problems I was having earlier (audiosurf not launching, games crashing windows, errors, broken DX9) and I'm not going to do a fresh install in a long time (ever lol) it's just far  too much hassle for the amount of stuff  I have. It may very well be Windows, as I doubt it's my hardware, but what in windows is causing this problem I wonder. Ah, well I'll try some more things tomorrow.

I've tried normal, low res, windowed no change from maxed out. It may be the squid (I'll check tomorrow), I don't know. Running on lowest makes all the blocks disappear :/

Be aware that you may still suffer bad framerate issues if you don't restart Audiosurf after changing the detail level. I suspect that might be what's causing the blocks to disappear in Minimal.

This wasn't an issue before the Feb.10 update -- I was playing the same songs just an hour or two before. It seems to do it in normal/enhanced/premium modes but not in minimum, so Dylan may be right about it being the squid.

But this never appeared for me until this update.

And no, this isn't an issue of needing a clean install of Windows since my current install is just about 3 months old at this point. I usually last a year before needing to do that.

Wow, so it wasn't me! I noticed it too, but I thought it was just me...
it looks like it happens as soon as the game starts moving the objects further as you advance on the song... Is this problem worth a new thread?

I had that problem for ages, it made windowed mode impossible and I had to use fullscreen, it's existed for months, it's not a new problem.

You mean Naka's problem or UncFester's one?
