Unicode update early access
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:36:15 pm »
The unicode update is finally ready for Steam! I think.

If you've got some time to try it out now I'd appreciate the help. Just download the zip file and extract it to Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\. Then run the game as normal.

http://media.audio-surf.com/Audiosurf_UnicodeUpgradeBeta_1.26.09.zip

If you're running Vista, please copy steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf to the Documents folder (where folder virtualization won't apply). Then unzip the patch into that new location. Then put a copy of steam_appid.txt into Documents\audiosurf\engine. Now run the game from Documents\audiosurf\Audiosurf.exe

Please report any bugs here or email them to me if you'd rather.

Thanks!

Can we get a changelog, so we know what to test? Or it's only unicode beta, so no other features yet like as-steep?

OH SHI-

Downloading now!

EDIT: If the .xml file on the LanguagePacks folder does what I think it does, I think I might cry...  :D

EDIT2: I'm getting the "Audiosurf was unable to connect with Steam", but I really have to format my PC (has been acting really strange lately), so might be that.

EDIT3(geez): Nevermind, it was my PC ¬¬

EDIT4: Ok, errors are starting to show up:

The "6" should be an "á" and the "c" should be an "ñ"

Same here, the "6" at the beginning should be an "á" and the "b" at the end should be a "ú"

First load it completely froze my machine on load, I had to force shut down. It gave me 7 of these errors, all in a row:

Thanks to the non-resizable window I can't see the files error'ing. But, after having to force shut down and loading it up again, I still get the errors, but it didn't freeze my computer. If anyone knows a way to find out what's error'ing, please let me know. Note: I have no problems with the original, and I've checked integrity to get the current AS back, and the errors disappear, so it's a problem within these files. Using Vista Ultimate x64.

Also, I've attached a screenshot of the Play screen, song scoreboard, and main menu. Japanese is loading fine, but I have a few suggestions:

General:

- Change the title of the window to "Audiosurf: Ride Your Music", or "Audiosurf - Ride Your Music" or any combination of - or : but I think you should capitalise it. "Audiosurf: ride your music" doesn't look right. It's a title, so it should be capitalised.

Main Menu:

- Put a space between the colon and account name.

Play screen:

- Make the font sizes consistant. The title of the song at the top, and the number of points required for the medals are in a huge font compared to the traffic info, hints, character info etc. Font size should all be the same.
- Traffic Congestion and Travel Time are not lined up, Travel Time is a few pixels lower than Traffic Congestion.
- Curosr size is TINY compared to the button and font sizes, you can just see it there at the bottom of the song congestion preview bit.
- The medal icons, gold silver and bronze, are huge and look really pixelated. Can they be re-done to look smoother?

Scoreboard:

- Again, make font sizes consistant. "Raw Points" is tiny compared to "Clean Finish Bonus", which is also bold'd, or looks like it, and it's also making the lines around Other Bonuses messy. I think you should make the font sizes bigger, and pull the whole scoring panel down a bit, and move the clean finish icon to be over the stealth icon, and make the lines the same size. This could also enable you to move the Strategy Guide button up to the space right of where the clean finish icon would be.
- Put a space between the name and value. "Final Score" and the actual score, a space after the colon, for each one.
- Put the fonts on the buttons the same, "Continue", "Add A Friend" etc has a nice smooth font, but the "Repeat Song" and "Previous Song" buttons have smaller, different font, no bold'd text which makes them really stand out and not look great.
- A few of the pixels are cut off of the left side of the medal icons giving them a straight edge, but the right edge is nice and smooth, the icons need re-doing.

That's all I've got so far, probably update it some more as I play. Love the new buttons, look really nice.

More bugs:

If you set the graphics settings to the new "Minimal" and then to any of the other ones, the particles at the background when you hit a block won't appear anymore (even if you restart the game, this is, if you set the graphics to "Minimal", you lose the particles forever atm)

The -Unattained- string is over the Royal Pride picture.

Pointman Elite text on the character selection screen has a different font

the Remove friend buttons on the Friends menu looks too stretched and doesn't center the written text correctly

The un-centered text bug happens on the last.fm button too

I can't create a new account because as soon as I press ALT to make the "@", I can't write anymore on the "E-Mail" textbox (strange bug  :-\)

The multiplier number on top of the character when using the Multiply powerup doesn't appear when using the "Minimal" graphics setting

EDIT: Characters' names aren't missing here, Lavos

Hmm, after restarting the text is back. Ok removed that one.

You get the errors on startup as well Virus?

Nope, no startup errors on WinXP SP3 32bit but I got 2 or 3 "AS couldn't connect with Steam" errors the first time I launched the game after replacing the files.

Yay!
Firstly: Thanks Dylan for putting so much time into this. :)

I'm getting the same Runtime error messages as Lavos^ is. I'm running Vista 32-bit.
Otherwise it runs fine.

However changing the window name seems to have broken my add-ons. :/
Not a huge issue, it's a trivial fix and I'm happy to do it, but it may break some other add-ons people are using that are no longer maintained.

Additionally on the add-on front, passing a filename with Unicode characters is problematic.
If you try and send a Unicode filename in ASCII Audiosurf obviously can't load it (you lose the actual filename and get a load of ?s).
If you send the entire command in Unicode, Audiosurf doesn't recognise the command and ignores it.

But for "regular" players I can't see any problems. :)

I can confirm the startup error Lavos is getting, I'm using Windows 7 Beta 32bits and I get them too, but mine displays the full path, it says Questviewer.exe does the problem, see pic:

Thanks! Really helpful feedback all around so far.

It looks like the runtime errors are caused by Vista's folder virtualization.

I'll have a patch for the patch ready soon.

Well, that gets rid of the popup errors, but as soon as I get past the seizure warning, my computer completely locks up and I have to force restart, tried 3 times, all 3 times it froze.
