Mafia IV
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:29:40 am »
As usual, please only join if you're active enough (as in, you can post at least once a day, preferrably more than that.)
Not posting can get you removed from the game, which can cause serious balance problems for the game (it may even end the game).
Those who have played Mafia before should pay attention to the bolded text, to see what rules we're using this time.

==Short game summary==
Mafia is a game where there are two teams: the mafia and the townies. The mafia know eachother, but the townies have no idea who is who. Both try to kill the other team. The townies do this by voting at day, the mafia do this by deciding who to kill during the night.

==Game rules==
--Starting the game--
To start, we'll need 10 players (I don't count as a player). Just post in this topic if you want to join. Once we have 10 players, I will randomly divide the roles between you. An unkown number of people will become mafia, an unknown number of people will become cops, and the people without a special role will be vanilla townies. The game will be played in rounds: we'll start with day 1, followed by night 1, followed by day 2, etc.

--Day voting--
During the day, everybody (even the mafia) discusses who may be mafia, and votes to lynch somebody.

Voting is done like this:
-To vote for somebody, post
Quote
Vote: PLAYERNAME
-To change vote, post
Quote
Unvote: OLDPLAYERNAME
Vote: NEWPLAYERNAME
-To not vote for anybody, post
Quote
Vote: Abstain

If any player receives more than half of the votes, he will be lynched at the end of the (game) day.

--Mafia--
An unknown number of people are mafia.
During the night, the mafia will (together) kill one townie.
When there are no townies left, the mafia win.
When there are no mafia left, the townies win.

--Mafia recruit--
One of you will betray the townies and join the mafia at the start of day 3.
This person will not know that he is the mafia recruit until day 3, however the mafia does know who is the recruit.
(Note that the mafia may NOT reveal to the recruit that he is the recruit.)

--Cop--
An unknown number of people will be cops. They are on the side of the Townies.
Every night, each cop will choose somebody to investigate.
I will then tell the cop whether the investigated person is on the side of the mafia (guilty) or on the side of the townies (innocent).

--Other rules--
*Never show anybody the PM I sent you with your role, or reveal your role in any other way. Anybody caught doing so will be modkilled.
*Dead people can't talk. If you're dead (or not in the game at all), don't post in the topic or try to influence the game in any other way.
*The day ends when everybody has chosen to vote or abstain. If people take too long to decide, they abstain by default. Maximum day duration will be 24 hours.
*The night ends when the mafia has chosen who to kill and the cops have chosen who to investigate. Again, if people take too long, it will count as if they didn't choose anybody. Maximum night duration will also be 24 hours.
*If there is disagreement among the mafia about who should be killed, and I receive different choices from different mafia, nobody will be killed.
*After every night, I will make a post stating which person has been killed, and state whether he was innocent or guilty. That person is then removed from the game.

I might end up having to modkill them for inactivity if they decide to join, unless they suddenly become more active...that would suck >.>

As townie: by having all townies killed.
As mafia: by having all mafia and the recruit killed.

I would, but I'll be out of town.  Can I submit a list of the people I would vote for as a townie to kill, and have my character just act autonomously?  I wouldn't be able to be mafia or inspector, of course.  It would be a bit of an added element of randomness, and might push someone over the edge for votes.
Since I don't know who all is playing yet, I'll post a list of the numbers, and you can change those into names.
4, 7, 1, 6, 2, 9, 10, 3, 8, 5.
If a number would lead to voting for someone who is dead, obviously the next number in the list would be chosen.  I know that it's too many numbers, but may as well list all 10.  I also obviously wouldn't be taking up a spot, as I wouldn't actually be here.
I also would not count as one of the people required for majority.

Too much work?  Or just don't want any randomness in this one at all?

I don't want randomness in mafia at all. The reason Mafia is such a great game is because it's all about the interaction between players. You try to get other players to vote for certain players, while trying to not make them vote for other players. You try to make others seem guilty while trying to make yourself seem innocent. The day votes are the result of this process. All votes are thought about and decided by the various players, based on the words and actions of the other players, which you can influence in various ways. A pre-set list of random votes cannot be influenced in any way; going against the entire goal of the game.

In the end, mafia is always fair, no matter how hard you get screwed over. If you get lynched by the townies, it's because you failed to convince the players that you are innocent. With the mafia picking a totally random player to kill as the only exception (which only happens during night 1, and not even always then), you can only lose if you're doing something wrong. Losing by random chance (as per your suggestion) or by something that was totally unpredictable (as was the case in Snipufin's Werewolf game, where a far-fetched hidden element decided the game with nobody expecting it at all) only makes the player think it was an unfair loss (because it was), which simply makes the game suck.

tl;dr: Random chance and/or other unpredictable factors make for a bad Mafia game.
