Problem with "Clean Finish"
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:00:49 am »
If you finish the song with couple of blocks flashing and there are still some white ones on top of them which would otherwise fall down and you would eventually get the clean finish bonus, you don't get it if the end is too near. I think that's a bug ;)

Or taking it one step further: Make it so that if the current setup would clear itself through successive gravity matches, it also counts as Clear Finish.

a simple fix is leave the screen black until the chain is lost.

Not quite. On Pro and Casual you have to keep hitting blocks to maintain a chain, gravity doesn't sustain it.

pro is horrible. doesnt matter if u make a mess and chain is always dissapering coz no gravity stack to extend chain

that doesn't make it horrible, it's just played differently. on most songs you can hold a chain about as well as pusher elite.

Pointman Casual is even more difficult, because if you drop a block, the chain disappers before the block even reaches the ground! You have to pick up another block between the dropping and ground-arriving, otherwise the chain/match disappers. This makes it very hard to sustain the chain or get Match21.
But it's a lot of fun to play.

Btw., Lethargy, can you make a video of your Pro-rides? I am curious what exactly you do ;)

That's actually true of pro also, even though it looks like it shouldn't be. The only time I think matches are sustained by gravity on pro is when the blocks actually touch each other and glow as they fall, though it does seem that hitting extra blocks may give you a split second more time to your chain while blocks are falling than while they are not, I'm not certain of that though, it might just be that I'm noticing the time added when I hit the block plus the time when the block lands from falling. At any rate, even though that's true, pointman casual is still hella harder because matches clear almost instantaneously and one can't queue up blocks. Mastering that mode is why Oopla was able to get so good at pointman elite imo, he used to only play casual I think.

I'll give it a shot, but in the past every time I've tried to use fraps for anything but an fps display my computer has hard locked.

Yeah. Well, what I meant for Pointman Casual was this: Suppose you have 3 blues which are flashing and another blue on your Pointman-pickup. If you drop the blue now, it will NEVER reach the ground before those blue matches stop flashing! As far as I know, at least this works for Pointman Pro. This is a different mechanic from Gravity Matching which indeed usually doesn't work for either Casual or Pro.

Also, in some rare circumstances Gravity matching seems to work, when the blocks have to fall only a few fields, or if while falling temporary matches are formed by the passing blocks or something like that... I don't really understand it.

Fraps computer lockup sounds bad... there are a couple of alternative programs, but they are only fast enough if you choose a low resolution (like 640x480). And then there is analogue capture which I am going to try some time which has the great advantage of not slowing down the game in any way (you need 2nd computer, however).

there are still a couple of problems like this around...there's also the fact that on really fast songs colored blocks at the end don't count cause the song ends before the blocks connect for a match ruining clean finishes
