Request: Maximum Song Length Increase
« on: August 31, 2008, 10:23:35 am »
I did some searching to see if anyone has requested to have the song length increased and yes this probably sounds stupid to ask for an extension beyond 1 hour (who has the time to play a song 1 hour long anyway) but when you really have nothing better to do why not give it a try right? Well I have some songs that I would never play all the way through, unless a feature would happen to be added that would save your place on a song to go back to that at a later time to complete the song *hint* *hint* however I have some great techno megamixes that are usually around 1 hour and 15 minutes which have songs that would be so much fun to play under audiosurf but sadly there is the problem of the 1 hour song limit. Is it possible to increase the limit to 1 hour and 30 minutes or better yet, make an option under the settings menu for the user to select the maximum song length? It could read basic hardware info and give the suggested maximum song length for your computer so that I could blatantly ignore it ^_^ Anyone who agrees/disagrees please post your opinions.

It was originally 25 minutes because of some screwy code regarding the Z-buffer, so said Pwn. I'm not sure what Dylan did, or maybe what Quest3D did, but they were able to fix it and go up to an hour, I don't know if the problem would still remain on songs over an hour, or if they can fix it.

that is a very good idea! i think the max. time should be 80 minutes because all CDs have 80 minutes and then you can surf DJ mixes and other.

It should be 82:30 then.

I like the idea of unlimited song lengths, dont wanna have to edit my mega mixes to get them onto audiosurf. Does anyone know what language audiosurf is coded in? I used to take some programming classes and if it's in a language I know a little bit about I might be able to take a look at the code and help figure out how to resolve the song length issue.

Heh. Audiosurf uses Quest3D. And even if you did have any sort of knowledge of it, the files are all copy-protected so I'm not sure how you'd go about decrypting them and getting them loaded back into Quest3D. Not putting you down, just saying...

No that isn't anything I'm famalier with, I get what you are saying but if it was something I knew how to code I was going to try to get in contact with a developer and help give them some suggestions. I thought of an idea of how they could fix the problem using a few variables but I don't remember how I could code it.

I would be grateful if the limit was increased a little bit. I have a full song that is 60:06 long. Just a little longer, please...

audacity is very helpful.  delete about 7 seconds of silence, and it should be fine.

Actually, there's barely any silence in the last seconds of Green Carnation's Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness, but I could remove the unnecessary loops that approaches near the ending.

I know that the block layout would change if any notes are removed, so that wouldn't be fair, but is it changed when silence is cut out, where there would be no blocks in the first place?

Actually, there isn't a single moment of silence in it. But I could do with editing it in some other logical way. Besides, I'm not bothered about not being able to play it, but I would be happy if the song length limit had increased a little for a change.

Thanks anyway!

I was kind of more asking in that it applies to songs in general, and the question was more directed outwards to the community, but also Dylan if he's actually tested this.

tracks/layouts are generated in context with the rest of the song, which means it could have an affect on the traffic, however, at this kind of length it would be an extremely small amount.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I would really like this too! :)

I have a lot of mix CDs that clock in at about 80 minutes, and I'd love to play them continuously without having to split them all in half.

Thanks!
