Why pillows? They're not pillows, they're blocks!
How sure of that ARE you?

Pillow is a brilliant name for them. Everyone should start using it.

i have the sounds off  :P when i hit a pillow then they are synchron to the music, so i dont need extra sounds to it ^_^
it's not always obvious how it's synchronized, and the sounds also chime when you get a medal, overfill, more than 7/11 blocks in one match...

i cant play very well if i don't have the sounds on as then often tell me whats going on without looking, but i do set them a lot lower than the song.
In your videos they seem to play at full volume. That was coming to my attention because they are kinda annoying to me. So I also have them turned down to about half the songs volume.

Hey--thanks for all the comments on the sound effects.  It is extremely hard to get the perfect sound effects going for this game to give you some feedback about what you're doing without being too obtrusive. And since it's a musical game and you can play any song--yup, that makes it even harder to make things synchronize with the song.

I would love to get sound effects going that somehow modulate to the key the song is in (although I think that might be a bit confusing because if sounds are higher pitched sometimes, you might think you're getting a higher score, etc) or somehow more intelligently match the mood of the song. Ah, the future wish list grows longer...

If any aspiring sound designers out there want to take a shot at developing some other sound effects schemes that you feel work better please do and let us know!

I personally am in love with circuits when I play Daft Punk Alive 2007. That was pretty much what that scheme was for :)

The sounds for hitting a block are ok, but the match sounds are indeed very bad... at least the standard sound effect "chimes".

"circuits" is a lot better, except that then the block hitting sound effect is bad.

Therefore I mixed up both sound file directories, so I use the "chimes"-sound-effect for hitting, "circuits" for matches, and custom made sounds for "power fail" and "overfill warning". Those custom sounds are actually just a modification of the overfill sound - I wanted to have something that always stands out and is immediately noticable it, since the standard sounds are not suitable for this.

And yes: Some volume adaption of the sound effects to the song volume would be great - harmony adaption would probably be too difficult and simply unnessary, I prefer anharmonic sounds anyway.
