Sound Effects -- Your opinion?
« on: August 23, 2008, 07:29:28 pm »
I personally detest the sound effects.  They tend to be obnoxious and totally dissonant against whatever key the song is in.  It was a nice feature to include, but I turned it off after about 2 songs and have left it this way ever since.

Do you surf with or without?  I see waaaayyy too many YouTube vids with the icky sfx on.  I highly recommend trying without if you haven't.

I leave them on, I like it. I turn down the volume though so they're only just barely audible. Enough to know that the sound plays, but without getting near the volume of overtaking the song.

I don't much like them when they're as loud as, or louder, than the song.

same, just barely keep them on.

anyone who need to hear a crowd cheering for them when they make a match probably has self esteem problems.

i use chill because of the finger snapping sound. It can help me keep in time with the blocks when i am trying to pay attention with out staring at my board unblinkingly.

So i turn it down just a bit so i can hear it.

when i play with out the sound i feel detached and as if the music is being dubbed over my game play.

hm.

i cant play very well if i don't have the sounds on as then often tell me whats going on without looking, but i do set them a lot lower than the song.

I have it on circuits because it's less obtrusive. Chimes... just gets on my nerves. Fast.

I've customised mine, and every time I hit a block it plays the whole of MIDI Anarchism.

Wow that sounds... really cool. did you set your windows alerts and startup sounds to do the same?

I've been trying sounds at low volume... It still feels intrusive on the sonic landscape to me.  I could see where it would be useful in knowing when you hit a block... my biggest issue right now is that I spend too much time looking at the grid and not enough time looking ahead.

I agree, the sound effects should at least somehow adapt to the key of the song. Now it just gets on my nerves. Not to mention really quiet parts in songs, they can really screw up the song if you try to enjoy the music. So I always keep sound effects off.

And it doesn't matter if you turn the effects a bit lower than what the music is, because the next album you play can be in a totally different volume, so you'd have to adjust the effects again. Unless you are using mp3gain or similar.

Oh, and the blocks aren't always 100% correctly synchronized to the music, so sometimes it can sound weird.

Why pillows? They're not pillows, they're blocks!
