Ive been trying to learn japanese on and off for a while now.
Hard when you have no one to talk to.

Same for me, sucks with no one to ask stuff. Louis is bloody from Singapore and can't even pronounce any Japanese properly, he's no help. D:

VDZ is pretty into it though so I'm gonna keep talking to him about it. :P

Quote
My favorite is learning how the Kanji symbols actually developed, like ookii (big) is a guy with his arms held out as far as he can reach to show how big something is.

Wow, I don't know if this is fate or what, but I was doing a basic phrase test, and got this question:

おおきい こえで はなして ください。

And the first word I read, "Ookii" and remember it instantly to mean "big", as I just read your post a few minutes ago, and knew the sentence means "Please speak loudly", so, thanks, you're teaching me, sub7th-sensei. ^_^

....ironic, isn't it?

the only way to get decent plot in japan is to play an adult game.

There is some variants that DOESN'T have questionable content, CLANNAD being a significant example.
Bullshit. There are many, many good visual novels without questionable content. Over half of the games released in Japan are visual novels; there are bound to be good non-adult ones among them.
Also, try Ever17. I'm still playing that, #$@#$@ huge...(no adult content in there, but a great story...with lots of details...and a sick game length)

Also, I know about sya, syu, syo and other ya, yu and yo things. I'm talking about things like 'tu' (no Japanese fonts here, can't type the hiragana) sounding like 'tsu' instead.

Same for Clannad. Clannad is for all-ages and it pwns as a visual novel.

sub7th-sensei. ^_^

Hahaha, hardly worthy of that title!
Like I said I've been TRYING to learn, not very successfully though.
But I love learning where words and phrases came from and it's the same with Japanese symbols, which are actually chinese.
I still cant really read japanese other than the few symbols I remember but I found that knowing why they were shaped the way they were helped them make more sense to me. And I started to pick it up quicker.

Whats the font you guys are using to type kanji?
I'll try to show you a couple others that are pretty interesting.
And is it just me or is that font really stylized?

Well I don't use a font for Kanji because I'm only sticking to Hiragana/Katakana. But I use Mincho.

We're only typing hiragana and katakana ATM (in fact, I'm avoiding the use of kanji because it would only confuse the shit out of everybody, including me).
As for how we type, I use the program JWPce and the default Windows IME thing, Twelve only uses the Windows IME thing, and for the others I don't know (probably also Windows IME).
If you want to know how to type kanji, the Windows IME automatically replaces kana with kanji.
わたし は ビンセント です。
If you don't press enter after わたし, it becomes
私 は ビンセント です。

You can also press space on any Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji and it'll give you a list of alternatives.

Sorry, I sleep at night ^_^
Might come back on IRC soon now, though. Anyways, if you want to tell me to come to another channel, you can just /query VDZ on IRC, which is a lot easier.
