Hello lady's and gentlemen!

Since the 'closing down' of the IRC Challenge bot, i felt the owner should continue with free and legal music.
It's a shame he wouldn't...

That's why i am making a new daily challenge program.
Everytime you start it, my program checks the date of your pc, looks up the online database i host myself and gives you the option to Download the song. After downloading the song you will be able to press a button to instantly start Audiosurf, and perhaps instantly play it to!

I've been doing this in Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition in my spare time, and think of releasing the source with it when it's done.

Only thing is, does anybody know any good free songs wich kick ass!?
And perhaps a good direct host, like www.website.com/filename.mp3 for direct download?
Feel free to comment/post ideas, i'll post any progress here

PS: Feel free to move this topic! Wasn't so sure about the category ^^
PPS: The music i will use will be 100% LEGAL, no copyright shit and all...

Changelog:
1.2.1
- Fixed another crash on download

1.2
- Fixed error on downloading containing a path error, that they were 'OutOfBounds'
- The Download! button is now disabled on downloading and re-enabled when finished or no host has been found.
- Added a check if the host server is online, preventing the program from crashing

1.1
- Changed starting directory folder
- You now can't download when a song hasn't been found
- Remade the download system, now with progress bar!
- Now remembers the last path

1.0
- First release

V1.2.1
http://files.filefront.com/AudioChallengezip/;10257749;/fileinfo.html

Due busy life etc blablabla I don't have the time anymore to fully work on the program. By this i released the source-code to fiddle around with the code, release your own daily sheit or learn from the code. If you ever going to sell it, please give me a cut or if you make it free, i'd like a little name in the credit :)
Source is in the attachement

Where do you intend to find free music daily?

Challenger started off well, but Jaska and Blah couldn't be bothered to update it anymore because it was too much effort. The bot was already dead before we had it pulled.

Do you actually have time to follow through with this?

Nope, we had maintenance problems.(mostly we couldn't change songs on it and nobody could download them.)

Yeha but before that. The song didn't get changed for days, especially around the time before Jaska gave it to Blah. And then we had Eiffel 65 music on there, which stayed on for like 5 days.... It really was coming to a crashing holt.

I hope when it's going to be released to have a list available for atleast 1 month, that means 31 songs.
I'll keep updating it.
I even think with the current process it will be done tomorrow, as it's been easier than i tought.

There are quality free songs all over the internet, you just have to look good.
Maybe some music-maker her eon the forum likes to have his song as a daily one time?

EDIT: I forgot to tell, the list is fully automatic. The only thing i have to do manually is edit the list.txt and rename the tags and reupload, wich should be not that hard

If one bothers to look, the amount of free and legal music out there is staggering. Now, finding enough that 1) Makes a good AS track (which is itself personal) and 2) Enough people will care about -- that's harder.

But might I recommend Overclocked Remix as a good place to start? Being as a large number of people here are general video game fans...

www.ocremix.org for good free music that works well on Audiosurf.

Also, a note about copyright: Even free music is copyrighted, technically. If you get nitpicky about the legal details, you need to have permission from the artist. Of course, in this case you can just assume that the artists don't care (or even like it), but technically it stays illegal until you get their permission.

About the music I posted on the forum: As I have tried to explain before, those were someone else's midis that I just changed a bit in FruityLoops. Technically, they aren't fully legal either, as the midi artist has the copyright to the midi I based it on. The only exception is the Bridge Zone remix, which I modified enough to be able to call it my own music. I also have some other music, but my music just isn't very good. I wouldn't mind if they were used as daily challenge songs, though (this goes for all of my songs, including those reinstrumentations).

Spam some bands myspace pages asking if we can use their music.

They should say yes, as they will want recognition and crap :P

Would take a while to actually find bands worth using though, so if the sites other people have posted work, they will be better.

check out www.jamendo.com for some great Creative Commons stuff from all genres.  Yes, I know that 75% of the music is crap, but there are some real winners in there.

Perhaps you could make weekly songs instead of daily ones.

But I think the game needs an official Challenge Of The Day option, which could give a special bonus for playing it or something. Other than that, it's a nice idea, I hope it works.
