I think this would be a great idea!  I would use a joystick and use the Joy-to-Key program in my sig, because it can controll the mouse too, so you would have 3 input-devices instead of 1 
Please keep us posted on where this thing goes, I would really like to see the finished product, and also maby make one of my own if this works.
