Common bugs, errors and solutions
« on: April 25, 2008, 09:16:29 pm »
    QUESTIONS

    UNOFFICIAL ANSWERS
    • Playback error 2:
You have a non-English character in the filepath, or a space. Audiosurf currently does not support Unicode characters. If you're loading music from another harddrive, make sure the harddrive is NTFS-formatted.

    • Playback error 4 / -1:
Playback error 4 or -1 indicates a problem with your sound card. Try updating your sound card drivers.

    • Playback error 44:
Chances are the song you're trying to play is DRM-protected (ripped from CD?). Audiosurf cannot load songs that are DRM-protected, try Tunebite, which you can try for free here: http://tunebite.com/en/remove_drm/ Also check out these solutions.

    • Options page blank:
You have a corrupt Options.cgr file. Navigate to Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\support and delete your Options.cgr file. Then verify your files through Steam by right-clicking on Audiosurf, and going to Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game cache.

    • Help! I accidentally disabled dethrone emails!:
Dylan to the rescue! You can re-enable dethroned emails here: http://www.audio-surf.com/enableDethronedEmails.php

    • Audiosurf crashes at startup with "This program has encountered an error and needs to close":
This one is hard to fix, as it can be many things causing it, it's hard to give a static answer.
      Crash at startup
On the error message that pops up, click on "click here" to see what the data report contains.
Look at the "ModName" section, if it says something like
                "87735CBE-1DBF-473B-A0A1-F17AF0CE904.dll", then navigate to
Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\channels, find the .dll that was listed, and delete it.
Then verify your game files by right-clicking on Audiosurf in Steam, and go to Properties > Local
Files > Verify integrity of game cache.
      Crash loading a song
Try choosing "No sound effects" in options.
      Crash during tutorial video playback
                Workaround (Thanks GM):
Do you have FFDShow installed? If so this can be causing the crash.
If you have ffdshow installed, and have it enabled for all applications, open up ffdshow options:
Start => Programs => ffdshow => Video Decoder Options.
(or Start => Programs => Combined Community Codec Pack => FFDShow Video Decoder
Configuration Choose "DirectShow control" on the left, tick the checkbox next to "Don't use
ffdshow in:" and append "QuestViewer.exe" into the box. Hit OK.

    • Audiosurf randomly restarts my computer:
First thing to try would be reinstalling the game. If that doesn't work, here's a few other things you can try:
         - Select "No sound effects" in options
         - Update all of your drivers, make a thread if you're not sure how or what you need
         - If you're using a laptop, be sure it has proper ventilation. Laptops get hot, and when they get too hot, they will automatically shutdown as a safety measure. Make sure air can get under your laptop.

    • The scoreboard doesn't work / I can't submit scores / I can't view the scoreboard / I can't login in-game:
As for the above answer, the server is under a lot of strain from everybody starting to play the game, submit scores and submit bugs to the forum. It's being worked on.

    • My songs won't load / Songs are flat tracks / The song won't load
Firstly, a common misconception is that Audiosurf can play all different songs. That's not entirely true. The game can play a lot of different song formats (mp3, wma, FLAC, etc), but it can not play protected music. If you have downloaded your music from iTunes, check the box in the options screen.
Workarounds: A partial workaround is to do one of the following:
      • Burn some music to a CD, and then pop the CD in and let Audiosurf use the CD to play music from. CDs can't be protected in the same way songs are, so they should play fine.
      • 'Burn' some music to an ISO file (Nero can do this, as can a number of other players (if you have a better idea, post here and I'll update this). Then you can 'mount' that ISO file and it acts exactly like another physical CD drive, and Audiosurf will see it as another music cd.
      • Break the protection using some external program so that they're just normal mp3 files. This is illegal and will not be talked about here, unless the admins want to risk that.
Of the workarounds, I'd suggest doing the second (making and mounting the ISO) if you're technically minded enough, as it doesn't cost anything and should work fine. If I get time, I'll do a quick overview of what is needed to do this.

    • I know my songs aren't protected, but they still won't play
There doesn't seem to be a simple solution to this, but a couple of people have solved it by installing codec packs to decode the mp3/wma/whatever data. I'd suggest starting with the CCCP audio/video codec pack, and posting here if that doesn't work for you. It's often quite a bit different from PC to PC, and it depends on chains of filters that are often quite different because of other software you've installed. One solution for the admins (if they're reading this) is to just say the hell with it and package the LAME decoder with the game, so that mp3 tracks can always be decoded no matter what the system has.
      Possible solution:
Download and install the CCCP audio/video codec pack, then close Steam completely and restart the game (You may be required to restart your computer after installing the CCCP anyway, depending on settings).

    • Some guy is on the top of the high scores list for every song / My high scores list doesn't update
This is possibly because the scoreboard isn't updating (due to the servers being overloaded) and showing the last data it was able to download from the server (that is, from a previous song). As with answers 1 and 2, once the server is upgraded and fixed, this shouldn't happen (source)

    • Audio browser doesn't look right / Song is flat-lining and audio browser is broken
This has been discussed quite a bit by a number of people in this thread and a workaround is discussed in this post - thanks freibooter!
      Workaround:
Start Audiosurf, select a character without a tutorial video. The Audiobrowser should work perfectly. Select a song, it should then analyze without a problem. Select back twice, select a character with a tutorial video. The audiobrowser should still work perfectly. Finally, the song should analyze without a problem and the game should then work (source).

    • I've been playing the demo and now the game doesn't work through Steam when I buy it
There's a few possible causes and solutions, but it looks like there might be a conflict between some files. Uninstalling fully and reinstalling seems to have fixed it for a couple of people.
      Workaround:
First, verify the game cache. In Steam, right click Audiosurf, click the Local Files tab, then click the 'Verify integrity of game cache' button. Let if verify and fix files if needed and try again - if that doesn't help then a couple of people have successfully deleted the local game files and re-downloaded it. I can't guarantee that this works (I haven't tried it), or that it won't screw something else up, but it seems the best way to guarantee you have the right files.

    • It loads the track, but there's only 1 or two blocks on it
This appears to happen when a song has too high of an amplitude.  Open the song in a sound file editor such as Audacity, and lower the amplitude(just by one should be fine).  It should load as normal in Audiosurf after that.

    • I can't click the OK button at the Photosensitive Seizure Warning!
Trying pressing shift-tab to bring up the Steam overlay.  This may cause the game to automatically skip ahead to the menu.[/li

Audiosurf crashes at startup with "This program has encountered an error and needs to close":
This one is hard to fix, as it can be many things causing it, it's hard to give a static answer.

Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\channels, find the .dll that was listed, and delete it.
Then verify your game files by right-clicking on Audiosurf in Steam, and go to Properties > Local
Files > Verify integrity of game cache.
I followed these steps, but when I tried to play it again, the same .dll file messed up the startup. Is there any other processes I could try?

BTW, Audiosurf is such a great game so I hope I'll be able to fix this problem.

May I suggest adding one more thing to the list.

If you have low fps, closing Xfire might help. I had terrible fps and was only able to play on minimal settings but when I closed Xfire I was able to play on premium (altough I still get those annoying grey balls flying towards me).

I would still prefer being able to play with Xfire so that my gaming hours are recorded but if it's not fixable by Audiosurf developers.. Well.. Too bad for me :I

Disabling the X-fire in-game interface might have the same effect whilst still allowing you to record your Audiosurf hours.
(You can disable it from the "Games" tab in the X-Fire Options)

Yeah that just came into my mind after I closed my computer yesterday. Thought that I will mention it today but you said it out first =)

Sometimes, when I go and check my score or someone else's score on the results screen after songs (not the new, Online Stats button screen), the score is automatically reported: I get my mouse on the score, the diagaram appears as usual, but the text says "report sent" immideatly.

I was crashing every time the game started so I deleted the entire Channels directory and verified cache.  After a small download the game works perfectly again.

A new pproblem for me has arisen. When I start the game, it won't let me press the OK button at the main page even (before the sickness warning). The mouse does not turn into a hand - like it usually does - when I drag it on top of buttons and nor the keyoard (liek presssing entert space or any button that would move me onwards) works. I have erinstalled the game and also plugged my mouse (USB mouse) back and forth, but so far no luck. MY guess is that the game does not recogize the mouse somehow. Could you please help me?:)

Also, try shift+tab to bring up the Steam overlay, then again to hide it.  I've had that get me past that screen before.
