America and the Kyoto Protocol
« on: April 20, 2008, 06:07:43 pm »
Quote
They actually called it quits on the Kyoto protocol as soon as Bush went to power, but I don't blame America for that, just the Bush Adminisitration.

You shouldn't blame the Bush administration, you should praise them! The kyoto portocol is just the epitomy of what's wrong with the climate change debate, it focuses ONLY on carbon emissions and spends billions trying to reduce them, when in reality you could do alot more to help manage any problems produced by climate change and indeed do alot more good for issues outside of climate change for a LOT less.

The kyoto protocol, if fully ratified by every country and if every country met its targets would only delay the temperature rise for about a year in the 2100's. All for the cost of billions! What a deal!

We could wipe out most malaria for something like 2% of Kyoto's cost,

(Iccy; i can understand why you locked the previous post i was starting cliamte change debate in, but this post is valid!!!111)

Global Warming a lie? Haha, I remember there being a huge change in weather over in Illinois when I stayed there at Christmas. Within the space of a few days, it went from -16C to +16C, then back again, and then thunder storms and a tornado in Wisconsin.

I think to some extent you are correct though Kinema. I guess the Bush administration isn't full to blame, but they had a huge part in it. The Kyoto agreement wont halt global warming, and there's not a lot we can do unless the entire earth was to change it's ways... and it's trying to. There's a lot of talk about Biofuels being intergrated into engines and that will help cut global warming down a lot.

You're just a complete ignorant idiot if you try to ignore it, look at the fu..

Go back to bed Garfield.

Hell we should be thanking Global Warming because of this picture!

Global warming exists for sure, however spending billions on global warming seems a bit useless to me. Like said before, there are other problems that are larger, have been around for longer, and affect people faster than global warming

Fair enough on changing the title Iccy.

Yes climate change is real, and yes man has had an influence on the magnitude of change we will observe. However the view that man is responsible for climate change is a very egocentric view. Climate change would be occurring whether man had industrialized or not. (I say climate change and NEVER global warming because the planet as a whole is not getting hotter, some parts are getting colder, im not interested in the 'average' temperature of the earth as this it does not show much and only serves to fuel propoganda).

Something that very few people realize is that over the next century or so the number of temperature related deaths is going to DECREASE. Rise in temperatures for specific regions will save lives. This is because a MUCH larger number of deaths are caused by the cold annually as opposed to the heat. In fact the amount of death caused by temperatures won't increase due to climate change until some point in the late 2100's.

Global Warming a lie? Haha, I remember there being a huge change in weather over in Illinois when I stayed there at Christmas. Within the space of a few days, it went from -16C to +16C, then back again, and then thunder storms and a tornado in Wisconsin.

Iccy you are making a huge fallacy here, firstly just because you observed something locally does not mean it is a trend globally, nor can you immediately blame climate change for unusual weather.  I'm not saying in this case they are not linked because i don't have that information, im just saying you can't immediately associate global warming with local phenomena

Threads with names just don't go well. Didn't want this to end up as a shit throwing festival.

Ok, ok, I though it would make for a good story. Still, the seasons are well out of sync at the moment... that you cannot deny. The cold/heat thing though is an interesting point. It might save lives, but it might also result in certain other problems like increased skin cancer and heat waves killing people.

I can't really comment on seasons being out of sync in America since i'm in Australia, and while we just came out of our longest heat wave ever (it was 40-45 degrees Celsius or higher for something like 2 weeks) this is nothing too surprising in Australia.

The deaths caused by heat are taken into consideration in the statistics that show that deaths overall will decrease Iccy. So for example 4000 people more may get skin cancer per year, but 10,000 less will die a year from pneumonia.

all you people who believe in global warming........

the exact same scientists who started this global warming myth will be saying it's the next ice age in ~20 years.  it's a cycle!!!!!!!!!!!!

i found a picture that proves it online sometime ago, but can't find it anymore.

and cody, it's an actual scientific evidence graph.  not pantyhose.
