The song that got me hooked on Audiosurf was Emerson, Lake and Palmer's 'Still... You Turn Me On.' I was just fascinated at how the game got so intense for that 3-4 seconds when the song sped up.
Since then i have been doing mostly metal and electronic, because those songs are the most 'fun' in the game. I'm a huge fan of classic rock, and even some easier listening 'classic pop...' but don't expect me to sit here and trudge through Boz Scaggs' 'Look What You've Done To Me'... It wouldn't really be any fun. I could listen to it in my car, or while doing something else... but Audiosurf is about 35% enjoying the song, and 65% concentrating on those blocks... and if those blocks are very sparse, and coming at you at a snail's pace... it just isn't fun anymore.
As for one of the most popular songs being a metal track, i'm assuming you mean Through The Fire And Flames, that is a pretty hot song at the moment. Adults and kids alike got Guitar Hero III, and that song was the ultimate one everyone wanted to beat, and it garnered Dragonforce a LOT of attention. As for Audiosurf, it is a very, very fun song to play. I consider it a rite-of-passage. I felt damn good when i stealthed it after about 4 or 5 tries... but then i realized there were in fact tougher things out there to surf.
As for 'pop' songs that were fun... i enjoyed a lot of Electric Light Orchestra songs... Don't Bring Me Down is fun. Secret Messages as well. Last Train to London took me quite a few times to ultimately stealth and clean in order to propel myself above the then top player by a few measly points.
Chicago's 'If She Would Have Been Faithful...' is surprisingly a very, very fun song to play. IMO the song and track are both pretty intense... even if it is a very Adult-Contemporary-ish piece.
Benny Mardones 'Into the Night,' has been a song of great competition between myself and another guy at work. So far we're the only 2 to do it on pro though.
