I have a feature request for you guys: please mess with the game's textures. I want to see what you come up with! This would be a good place for screenshots - or make your own thread.

The replaceable textures are in steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\textures. Just change any of those graphics and restart the track (no need to restart the game).

hit1.png: flash when a block passes your car - white background
hit2.jpg: flash when a block passes your car - black background
particles1.png: white background fireworks
particles2.jpg: black background fireworks
particles3.jpg: mono fireworks
ring1A.png: 128x128 white background tunnels (normal)
ring1B.png: 256x256 white background tunnels (enhanced/premium)
ring2A.jpg: 128x128 black background tunnels (normal)
ring2B.jpg: 256x256 black background tunnels (enhanced/premium)

Note: Your replacement textures need the same file name, but they don't need to be the same size. Make a 1024x1024 ring2B.jpg if you want to (watch out for a performance hit with textures that big though). The PNGs use transparent backgrounds while the JPGs use black backgrounds. The images are all greyscale since they're colored dynamically.

I was just about to make a thread asking about what textures were changeable.  This sounds like a rather cool idea, and maybe something that could be custom tailored per song?

Feels like a treadmill... ship's going in retrograde since the rings come at you at the same speed you travel, but from opposite direction.  Lips sealed

Interesting that they aren't all PNG already...  Undecided people who end up remixing JPGs could make artifacts pile up...

EDIT: the below isn't recommended to use; it is just experimentation with the default ring texture.

Just made a pretty good looking one, trying it out now...

I might upload it later if it is good...

Just a reminder for everyone to keep the original textures for future reference/backup/whatever...

That involves actually changing the games coding. However, if animations were able to take a set of images from a certain location (eg. a folder) and loop them, it would be possible to edit the frames.

There are animated PNG's, but it hasn't really caught on with mainstream yet.  It's pretty cool stuff -- has a full range of alpha transperancy, 16 million colors, and the filesize isn't terribly large.

Here's my effort, I've done nearly a full set (excluding the white background images), I also tried to make the tunnels 'feel' faster and more chunky  Grin

I did the obvious thing with the particles and used musical notes  Tongue

Oh yeah before I forget, here's a youtube video of the alterations on the 80's cartoon theme tune Dungeons & Dragons -> http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VqfPhXXBekc

Just extract the zip to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\textures\
Unless you have steam installed elsewhere then you know what to do anyway Wink

DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A BACKUP OF THE TEXTURES DIRECTORY! hehe I nearly forgot.

*gets a life*

Oh, and a suggestion: Allow us to switch between mods in the game. Like, every mod has a folder in the textures folder (such as textures\default), and in the game you can pick the folder it loads the textures from. It would be much easier that way ^_^

EDIT: Also, [0_x], can you upload yours to megaupload or something? I like it ^_^

I sneakily edited my post after I uploaded the textures to megaupload but it seems nobody noticed lol  Cheesy

Here's the link for the textures.rar file -> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V1RQG83G

I've edited my previous post and attached the zip of the first version of these so now you can take your pick not only in which version you like, but where you want to download from  Grin

Also Yay! thanks Dylan for uploading my 2nd version to these forums  Smiley
