Control Scheme
« on: January 12, 2008, 07:19:41 pm »
So after playing around a bunch more this evening I have come up with a few suggestions for when a user control scheme is implemented. I would enjoy having the following features available to customize in my options menu as far as controls go:

Disable Mouse: (On / Off) ; Does what it says, disable the mouse controls when you are on a run so that you do not bump the mouse and mess up a good run.

Snap To Lane: (0-1-2-3-4-Off) ; Would let you choose what lane you want the vehicle to snap to when no keys are being pressed as with the WASD control scheme currently in the game. Lanes would be numbered from 0 (left alley) to 4 (right alley). This feature could also be turned off if one wanted to, so that the vehicle would stay where you put it when you let go of a key.

Goto Left Alley:
Goto Lane 1:
Goto Lane 2:
Goto Lane 3:
Goto Right Alley:

Does the same thing as the tilde-1-2-3-4 keys do now, except that you can bind any key you want to those functions.

Move Left One Lane:
Move Right One Lane:

Moves the vehicle one lane left or right.

Action 1:
Action 2:

These keys would be the equivalent of what the mouse buttons are now, but again could be bound to any key.

Again, these are all just my humble suggestions, and you can take or leave them as you see fit because in perfect honesty the game is amazingly awesome as it is now.

Thanks, that's a good breakdown of the functions to bind.

I'm surprised people prefer Audiosurf with the keyboard. I almost always use the mouse and sometimes an Xbox controller.

I wonder if you could hook up a guitar controller and use the 5 buttons on the neck as one for each desired lane.

Its actually funny you should say that last comment...

I used to play Frets on Fire, the PC freeware guitar hero clone, and I used to hold my wireless keyboard like one would hold a guitar with the frets being the number keys or F-keys. I was playing audiosurf just now and I started using the tilde-1-2-3-4 keys with the keyboard help like a guitar and it felt much better than normal for me, so I bet a guitar controller would actually work pretty well. I haven't tried an xbox controller myself because I don't have any, but I will have to borrow one from a friend to see how well it works. What kind of control scheme do you have set up for the controller?

The current Xbox control scheme is a little odd and wouldn't be the default in an XBLA release. You can use either stick to steer around freely across 3 lanes. To get to a shoulder you press both sticks in the same direction.

It's either the shoulder triggers or bumpers for mouse clicks.
