They need to be drm-free m4a's. The majority of itunes music is drm-protected. Just do a google search for how to remove the drm from itunes music and how to get the music off your ipod.

mrbutter: not necessarily, and once the music is on an ipod, its a hassle to get it back off. thanks, apple.

There are programs to rip music off your ipod and put them on your computer, then you'd have to convert them all to say mp3 format

If the files on your iPod are just regular plain old mp3's, you can use Winamp to take them off your iPod or just enable disk use on your iPod and litterly drag and drop them from the iPod onto your computer.

I was able to just play the songs sirectly off the iPod which showed up as a removable drive. All the songs were randomly sorted into folders named 3d56a and the songs similarly. Was actually not unlike a random button to load them :P

Yeah, that's how they are actually stored on your iPod. Use Windows Explorer and it's the same...

Nice, though it might get confusing after a while...  :(

You could use Yamipod to take the songs off your Ipod, make them mp3, and keep the lables.  Worked for me. Direct Download: http://www.yamipod.com/download/click.php?action=go&to=yam-win

You can also be free from the apple os and being tied to itunes by installing a replacement os on your ipod, such as http://www.rockbox.org (its free).  Works with most older mp3 players (not just ipods), I use it on my 30G iPod Video and it works like a charm.
