Like the Game, Hate Steam
« on: March 03, 2008, 09:30:36 am »
Hi,

I tested it and now I want to buy it because I like it. Is there another way to get it without using Steam? Because I'll never use Steam.

Steam is currently the only distribution method.

why don't you like steam?

I've been using Steam since like 2004 or 2003. Awesome distribution system.

I don't like any marketing tools. And Steam is just a huge marketing tool that you install by yourself.

I just hate that. We are already trapped, I don't want more, when I buy a game or movie or anything else I don't have any other relation with the place I bought it from.

Just found the game interesting, I'll pass then.

Well think of it from another POV:

Once you buy audiosurf on your steam account you will be able to play it on ANY computer that has steam. If you're at a friends house and he wants to try it out, download and install steam, login toy our account and bam! You'll be able to play almost immediately!

I also very much like teh fact that there are no hassles with CDs or DVDs. I've tried to limit my PC gaming to simply games available on steam. It's one huge awesome platform.

Granted, I normally just play counter-strike source lol.

I'd rather take the CD/DVD where the game is, and install it to his comp with no-cd crack and BAM!

There is no reason to hate steam.
Being forced to run steam while I played audiosurf killed my framerate. I have an older computer (only a 1.8 Ghz P4), and trying to play with steam running in the background is just too much for my computer to handle. Before anyone says it, I don't have the money to get a new computer.

I tested this with a cracked version I got from a friend (that has since been removed and deleted), and I was able to run the same songs on the same settings with no framerate issues.

So while I dont hate steam altogether, I dont like that I'm forced to run it.

Why do you want to know?

Because, unfortunately, most people's dislike of Steam stem from the older versions that were buggy and slow. However, since he has entirely different and valid reasons for disliking Steam, I won't press him further.

I run a home theatre PC, and I keep it as slim-line as possible (they are VERY temperamental, so I also make regular disk images when stable).  Steam is simply another process that I don;t want to have running on my HPTC.  It would be okay if it incorporated itself into the HTPC environment, but at the moment, no thanks.

What os do you run on that thing?
I've got vista home premium running on mine with vista media center going 24/7
I've got a few nifty scripts implemented so i can pop right into portal or hl2 or tf2 right from the media center menus. I can't imagine it's all that taxing on the system

@RitchieTheBrit

Don't understand what you mean, sure Steam is another process on your computer. Every program you run on your computer is another process. It's not that your forced to run Steam while your not playing Audiosurf, simply shut it down and it's not running. Where's the problem?

Unfortunately Steam has become hugely bloated crapware now.

I've been using it since CS 1.5 and loved it back then, when it was simple, and did exactly what I wanted it to do, just load up my games, without the zillion things they've now added into it which I don't even want, making basic functionality slow and horrible.

I can really see why people hate it and would not want to use it, but I just try my best to ignore it, and use it as less as possible. Usually I load up Steam and the game straight from XFire, so I don't have time to let it annoy me.
