Fences FTW! Just double click to hide/show icons, and you can sort it for categories, having more than 1000 icons on your desktop graded tidy. I started to use icons on desktop with Fences, uninstalling objectdock; sure if you have never felt the necessity of use or you have never used objectdock probably hiding icons is enough. By the way for me was a save of system resources, and it's totally free! :o :-X

ya except fences would of been better if they actually stole folder views from KDE instead of making something based of it. i really wish there was a way to get a stable KDE running on windows.

KDE isnt and operating system it is a desktop environments for linux distributions.

all im saying is that what fences does is an idea taken from kde but fences did a crap job at remaking it

fences just groups desktop icons the kde folder view allows you to see the contents of and set of folders you want and allows it to make dynamic groups based of of the metadata of files so i find it is a lot more useful and more flexible.

you can see it in my screenshots from previous desktops on this tread

Though they don't really consider themselves a desktop environment anymore, as they renamed "KDE" to "KDE SC", for software compilation (which, in my opinion, makes a bit more sense since KDE is just as well about the many programs surrounding it than only the Plasma Desktop and kwin Windowmanager).

As for trying it out in Windows, give this a spin: http://windows.kde.org/

Last time I tried it, the Windows version was far from stable, though. So if you want the "full experience", you should consider switching to Linux.

i do bits of development with kde and the windows is not going to be to useful as a DE but the lighter weight apps work good in windows
