This is a longshot, but in just in case Quest3D or Audiosurf use "Managed DirectX" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Managed_DirectX ) it might help to install the really, absolutely very latest DirectX Redist (yes, Redist, not the usual End User Runtime).

The latest one seems to be the build from November 2007:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1a2393c0-1b2f-428e-bd79-02df977d17b8&DisplayLang=en

Installing this will not update or break your current DirectX if you already have the latest End User Runtime. It will however add all dlls that have been added to the MDX API since. If the update doesn't help then there is no harm done.
The above build will most likely be the last one that does so since MDX has been discontinued in favor of XNA.

Thanks for the suggestion - alas the problem still exists! I've my XP reinstall cd sitting in the drive good to go :) Hopefully I'll post back in a few hours with good news!

Freibooter--we just came to basically the same conclusion after talking to woof, who, after loading up a simple white screen got a directx error. We pointed him to the end user runtime version though, so I'm not sure which of these might be a better shot for him and 2kreative. Here's the one we pointed him to (just sent you a PM too, 2kreative):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

Dylan says he didn't use MDX, so he doesn't think the Redist one is necessary.

Thanks so much for helping us troubleshoot!

Update--wuff just fixed his mysterious white screen error by reinstalling the latest directx

http://www.audio-surf.com/forum/index.php/topic,1140.15.html

So--I think a direct x update should do it for you. He did it one way, but you could also try the link in the previous email:

Ah. bummer. We've been trying to figure out what that basscd.dll error is and we don't know--the only other person I have with this one also uses Vista, and I'm hoping that it will work once the update is integrated into Steam (they have better ways of dealing with Vista quirks than we do over our exes).

Yep. just installed the game via steam. have tried what has been mentioned here. no luck. there is nothing worse than buying a game that could be easily downloaded and to have it not work.

here is my error screenshot

Sorry for the error--in case you haven't tried these things, most people have fixed this error by either restarting Steam and/or their computer. You may also want to validate the integrity of the steam files.

I'll PM you with another fix you can check out if those things don't work.

Foobar2000 > iTunes > Winamp. Ever since 3.0 and hence, 5.0, Winamp has become the Windows Vista of audio players. Trying to be everything. I used to like Winamp when it was what it should be: just a music player. Not a ripper, not a tagger, not a BURNER, not a VIDEO PLAYER, not all that other bloated crap...

... Oh, what was this topic about again? Shit... sorry. :P
