I use NCH Software's Debut program, then Prism for conversion.
Debut has the window selection ability but DON'T MOVE THE WINDOW. It doesn't select the program, it only crops the windows current position and size. It is capable of DirectShow recording as well as most programs, and supports PCM recording and all that jazz.
If you use Prism, you will have to buy it for things like .FLV files, but the free version allows .AVI and .WMV and maybe some other stuff. You can crop it, re-size it, change the quality, and even the bits per second. It also gives you a list of codecs to choose from and even supports XviD. Some you have to download, but it uses an on-demand system, and it's pretty seamless.
The programs themselves are super tiny and take up almost no CPU or RAM, unless of course, you are recording. They also give detailed descriptions of what's going on.
If you go to their products page the normal way, through their home site, you can't find the free version. The "free" page and the other page are on the same HTML, so you have to search for it.

http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/To get the free versions just search for the product and add "free" to your query. No, I'm serious, that's what I did. I put in "nch debut free" into the search bar and got a different page. I have no idea why they would do that.
Also, I need some assistance. I've recorded and formatted the video, but I can't upload it. I select the file to upload, and it says it IS working but it stays the same percentage continuously. It's like it's just stuck.
