Ideas for ASA
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:31:23 pm »
Since ASA is in production I thought it would be good to post some ideas for the new game that wouldn't be to hard to implement.

Here are a few I thought of
-an optional model system that is less GPU intensive for people on an intel GPU (this is an indie game you know not call of duty)
-a way to create characters either through mods or an in game creator
-maybe the option to increase the number of colors as well as decrease the number of blocks you can have at one time or just about any way to turn the difficulty up a notch (or 10) when you get bored

(If something is wrong with this post i apologize i am new and didn't find a specific topic on forum rules)

Oh so now indie games can't have good graphics?
Also, Audiosurf already has a netbook/Intel integrated GPU mode, check out the Minimal graphics option. I must say it runs quite well on my lappy's Intel card.

Other than that, I think having a "Create your custom ship" feature would be nice as long as it doesn't affect gameplay (due to the scoreboards and such).

Finally, about the blocks thing, I think it could quite work in a similar way as the [as-caterp] tag.

Call of Duty is a bad example, it has terrible graphics by PC standards. Anyway, the newer integrated Intel GPUs (HD 2000/3000) aren't that far off the performance you can get out of a console now (remember the 360 and PS3 are running on tech from 2005), so unless you're running an old Intel board you should be fine, looking at how things are.

I'm hoping both of these will be possible through the scripting support Dylan mentioned in my add-on thread. If it is then it shouldn't be hard to create some sort of visual representation for those less inclined to code.

I mostly hope for some kind of built-in recording function. Watching a replay is cool, and making it easy to upload is something that this game could really use - would save a lot of users a lot of hassle.

The game should save the co-ords of the ship and block's collected, would be a pretty small log to keep and only keeping the last run. Then you could reply the run allowing you to record it, or the game to render the frames and dump to disk.

Many games do this these days, TF2 and SpaceChem to name two.

Raw uncompressed would be nice for those of us who like to edit the video, and ofc an option to compress (.ogm or webm as they are free) for those who don't want to edit and just straight upload.
Australia is kinda awesome, but it's no Yorkshire.

I forgot about the idea of a demo system. It's something that a game like Audiosurf really needs and I also hope that ASA will have it.  It'd fix the problem for those who have their gameplay performance reduced by game recorders like FRAPS. Which would encourage a lot more video uploads, compilations etc. Like blue_h3x said; a frame by frame dump where you can specify the output fps would be nice as well.

ERtrysDynat told me to do it.

I have thought about the idea of a built-in recorder for a long time. A built-in recorder would encourage more players to make videos for uploading them. It really would avoid the problems players tend to have while recording such as lag problems with Fraps and compression.

People would finally be able to upload their actual best run!

Also, if you accidentally make a good run and it's saved anyhow, there'll be a lot more impressive videos online.

And it will be easier to spot cheaters too since the demo will be at actual speed.  Seeing moving at god speed with the best matches ever... that'll be a cheatbuster!

doing replays/demos might be a bit harder on unity than your typical game engine for a fps game like source or udk. since in the case of source and udk, your netcode is at the very base of the engine, and the data be captured by the replay system is the same data the server is sending to the clients. Even in single player for source and udk, your actully playing the game on a local listen server that is running with the game client.

Better search. I'd like to be able to search for *part* of the title, or *part* of an artist's name. And more search results, especially for popular artists would be nice too :)
